Yes, the US certainly cares about spreading "democracy" to places such as Iraq.

Ortega only has about 20% right now, while Herty Lewites (a former Sandanista turned sell-out) has 35% & right winger Eduardo Montealgre has 23%.
The biggest thing has drawn the reaction of the U.S. are recent demonstrations demanding the ouster of the current government (lead by Sandanista elements), the recent swing in Latin America to "left" social-democrats (although this has mainly been in South America not Central), Ortega's alliance with right-wing ex-President Arnold Aleman, a conservative who was convicted of corruption but has kept control of the Constitutional Liberal Party, and the fact that the electoral commission has ruled against a runoff of the top two candidates as long as someone on the ballot claims at least 35% -- which is how much the Sandanistas usually get.
Here's my favorite part:
Roger Noriega, until recently the Bush administration's top envoy to Latin America, told the Managua newspaper La Prensa that the Sandinista leader is a "hoodlum." Nicaragua would "sink like a stone and reach depths such as those of Cuba," if the Sandinistas returned to power, Noriega said.
Reach depths such as those of Cuba? Cuba surpases Nicaragua in every single social measure -- every one!

" Nicaraguas left-wing Sandinista party plans to buy oil from Venezuela in the councils they control, at a forty percent discount."
