But anyway, I listen to music because it sounds good, not because it follows an ideological stripe.

I've been listening to a couple of new metal bands recently.
Light This City (female vocalist, good old school thrash)
Reflux (hardcore, metalcore act - interesting lyrics!)
Himsa (sorta straight up metal, complete with 'Satanism', which is dull. But they're OK)
Check 'em out!

Pantera leftist???? Seems an oxymoron to me.
pantera isn't a band that held big ideals, anselmo did..
but the whole confederate flag was just about when they came from. they respected thier roots, which is comendable. They wenrt rascists or anything.
if you have a download program like limewire or kazaar, look out for 'Phillip anselmos speech on rascism'. He says some good things at a live performance.
if your a fan check it out.
ah yes and, mesuggah, fear factory, rob zombie, soulfly, rage, pantera, type 'o' negative, strapping young lad, life of agony so many more im not even gonna attempt to finish the list.
one thing though, people should check out alice in chains, best band to come out of seattle. yes, thats right, better than nirvana. tenfold.

metallica had quite a few revolutionary songs, they're an amazing band.
Slayer- awesome.
Cradle of Filth are a must everytime you feel twisted and vampiric. although dani's vocals are irritating, and all their goth cliches get irritating.
Mysticum (http://www.mysticum.com/)- amazing industrial black metal. their 1994 album is available for free download here.
IRON MAIDEN! Need I say anything.
I need more Meshuggah. I is mindbogglingly mindboggling.
There's much more, but I don't have many full albums, just mp3s.

That depends on your opinion, and what about top 40 chart music? You have millions of mindless drone fans, yet none of us or those seen as "music connoiseurs" particularly like it, surely that style of music is the most overrated.

Fair enough, calm down guys, I said probably left, I don't exactly look into the politics of cheese metal bands...
I thought they may be left because some of their songs seem to have leftist and progressive ideas, e.g. Run To The Hills is quite anti-British invaders, Paschendaele is about the WWI battle and Hallowed Be Thy Name takes a look at a man about to be executed, and I assumed it was anti-execution.
But I guess now its clear they're pretty patriotic, although it could be all for show, I remember when I saw him waving the flag around on The Trooper video I thought "wow, that's cool, these guys can put on a good show" rather than "oh no, patriots!".

The problem with metal is that it has become too mainstream.I see little kids turning metalheads cos they think it's so cool!And they think that true metal is new Metallica,Green Day,LInkin Park etc!And they dress in black thinking they're different..I cant stand them..
Anyway I like:
Opeth, My dying bride, old Maiden, Queensryche, Black Sabbath, Anathema, and many others.

Metal represents the critical voice against human degradation, that's why many death and blackmetal lyrics deal with death, suffering, desperation, anti-religion and human existence. Even tough there are some people that bring their racist and nazi crap to the genre (as in every musical genre), metal remains an icon of of human resistence against destruction. there also many apolitical good bands.
My favorites:
Death metal:
Malevolent creation (with bret hoffman), Brutality (scream of anguish, one the best technical death metal album ever!), Death (R.I.P Chuck), Krabathor, Depresy.
Black metal (mostly atmospheric and progressive):
Lord Belial, Emperor, Dissection, Samael, Moonspell.
Anyway I like:
Opeth

Orchid is a wonderful record, which would be nicely complemented on your shelf if you got "Morningrise" which is probably Opeth's best effort.
I'm a big grind fan: Cephalic Carnage, Assuck (anarchists), Cattle Decapitation (vegan pacifist anarchists), Leng Tch'e, and Agoraphobic Nosebleed.
Death Metal favorites: Opeth (w00t), Nile, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and of course Death.
Otherwise in the other categories is enjoy My Dying Bride, Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah, Mastodon, Requiem (hardcore punk anarchists a la crimeth inc.), and Corrosion of Conformity (pretty big lefties).
See I am in absolute love of metal and all extreme music genres... but I wouldn't say its particularly left. I would say grindcore most certainly is, but even that is beginning to become less and less true as more bands are trying to "shock" and be the next Cannibal Corpse (gag).

Anyways, has anyone heard A Tribute To Nothing? I bought a CD blindly for 99p a few months ago and still haven't listened to it, what d'you all think of them? I listened to the first song and to be honest they sounded a lot like Pantera wannabes.

I'll look for "morningrise". I like Therion also, but their last album sounds more like new age stuff. The same as Samael, they were atmospheric blackmetal but then put some electronic and now sound like industrial metal. I have nothing against that style, but they were much better in their earlier albums.
For me, Dimmu burguir "Stormblast" is their best album; the 4th song of it is perfect.

You guys rule! Although I shouldn't be THAT surprised that fellow leftists are also likely to be fellow metalheads...
I used to be really hardcore into metal, my favourite bands were Opeth (I like Blackwater Park best), The Haunted, Arch Enemy, Theatre of Tragedy (<favourite EVER!), Nile, Dream Theatre, Lacuna Coil, Iced Earth, Slayer, In Flames...
And although I don't consider them metal, Tool and APC (MDN over their other albums though) are among my favourite bands ever as well.
I saw so many metal shows in Toronto that I now have a slight hearing impairment. I feel like I'm 60 years old sometimes... I stopped listenning to metal when I moved out of my mom's house and lost my mp3 collection. I didn't have a proper computer for years. Now that I do again, perhaps it's time to reclaim my metal roots! Rave on, rave on \m/

I would not judge Iron Maiden on just Bruce Dickerson. Before he joined the band Iron Maiden released a single off killers(don't recall which song) with Margaret Thatcher being knifed by Eddie, besides Steve Harriss writes the majority of the lyrics.
Megadeth, Voi Vod, Slayer, D.R.I., Dio, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Death Angel are metal bands that I like but I prefer punk.

That quote from Bruce Dickenson from Ozzfest was said because Sharon and Kelly Osbourne were pelting eggs at him, so he taunted them on how much they'd turned American, or something like that. Make of that what you will.
I always say this, but i fucking love Trivium, old thrash like Metallica and Slayer, and another of my favorites is Cradle of Filth- I'm not too keen on the gothic music, like on Cruelty and the Beast, but I love the way Dani delivers his vocals - they're even better live than on the records.

The thing I really hate about metalcore is that the great majority of metalcore bands are christians, or super whiny. Add in that almost all those bands sound the same... and I come out hating them.
A few metalcore bands I like: Shadows Fall, Lamb of God, and Dillinger Escape Plan. But for the most part its just barked verse, whiny chorus, barked verse, whiny chorus, breakdown, whiny chorus...
Nu-Metal is just corporate shit. Except RATM... because they are obviously anti-corporate, and yet were on a corporate label.

It's called "romania
I heard something about Slipknot, eh?
A slip knot (or running knot) is one of two different classes of knot. The most common are knots which attach a line to an object and intentionally tighten when tension is applied to the free end of the line. The other is a type of knot designed to bind one end of a rope to the middle of another, while allowing the knot to slide along the rope.
Slipknot is a 433 member nu metal band who often wear masks- believed by some to hide their Elephant Man-like deformities- and by others to be the embodiement of Halloween (also known as Easter).
Slipknot's music, while sounding satanic, is actually a metaphor for God and the joy that He spreads to every boy and girl in the world. Because of this, Slipknot has come under fire from true-fans of nü-metal (yoü know, fäggy little wannabes who think they're "hardcore", but actually shït their own pants when they hear Morbid Angel). Recent interviews have revealed that the band's name is actually an acronym meaning "Stupid Little Ignorant People Know Nothing Of Tomorrow", although no further explanation of this phrase was offered.
Before they made music, Slipknot made agricultural implements and worried sheep. They would often headline at Young Farmer meetings, where a following of milk maids convinced them to go global.
One notable member of the band is The possible lovechild of Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde, who is one of Slipknot's many drummers.
Warning not suitable for young children. Most songs may involve cursing and loud shouting into the microphone in demon like voices.
Slipknot has had many members, but perhaps the most notable were original singers Drew Snyder and Trevor Beasty, fortunatly they were both killed in a gas huffing accident while Les Claypool of Primus was eating cheese. They were recenty replaced by new lead vocalists Jimmy D'Alessio and Matt Mahoney, and at the time Claypool claimed he was drinking his own urine.
The band consists of:
* 237.3 Drummers
* 110 Guitarists
* 42 Vocalists
* 30 Bassists
* 11 DJs
* 7 Dave Grohls
* 37 people who jump around hitting objects/people with 2x4's
* 4 calling birds
* 5 people screaming "why?...why?...why?"
* 3 French hens (a holdover from their farming days)
* 2 turtle doves
* 200 grams of self raising flour
* 1 teaspoon of caster sugar
* 2 fully equipped portable airports to assist members around the stage
* A partridge in a pear tree.
* Plus one large pie, preferably apple-flavoured
The band was named "Slipknot" because one of the members had died while bungee jumping of Mt. Everest for no particular reason. While the band member was jumping, his knot in the cable slipped, causing him to plummet to a bloody death.
Slipknot often preform the act of Sodomy on stage, sodomizing little children and big black men, while banging the crap outta anything on/near thew stage and hitting random instruments.
Slipknot are probably most famous for using the 'F' word once in a concert in Little Buggersbottom, Scrotshire, UK in 2001. This damaged their reputation somewhat and they have never played the UK since. The Little Buggersbottom Womens Institute are now protesting to have Slipknot banned permanently from the UK, although at this time, they are having problems getting the complete list of band members together.
:D :D :D :D :D :D . Slipknot isn't even metal. Slipknot is progressive rock+rap.

RATM nu-metal, I thorught nu0metal was stuff with turntables and that, slipknot, korn etc.
They're 'Alternative Metal', easily confused with Nu-Metal (The Deftones are a good example)

Nu-metal is metal with a strong hip-hop influence. I think RATM were pretty rap-influenced, although I haven't heard enough to judge properly.

I've came across perhaps the most sublime and philosofical Black Metal band I've ever heard: Negura Bunget, from Rumania. Deep atmospherical, a mix of slavic, latin and scandinavian indigenous sounds with transilvanian shouts. Besides these guys are really concerned about making good music seen as an artwork.
They sound amazing. Have a link?

All their albums are great. They are a huge part of the real black metal that remains. Unfortunately most black metal is crap like cradle of filth or dimmu borgir, that talk about satan and crap. I respect even NSBM more(at least they're not commercial , but they're dumb, of course :D )
Just look at dimmu borgir

if the black metal you listen to is limited to dimmu burguir, then I understand calling it crap (in their last albums). However you are bit outdated in black metal music. Satanism, paganism, odinism, ocultism are no more than a reaction to religious crap, and those are the subjects that gave life to black metal more than 15 years ago; and of course their lyrics shouldn't be taking seriously. I know many bands want to follow the mainstream subjects, and they become boring. others (such as Samael and Dimmu burguir) have put some much industrial and eletronics that the results are really poor. Black metal has evolved so much, the best bands right now deal with subjects such as human suffering, human existence, or highly technical and complex musical experiences using deep lyrics and artwok. I also enjoy Nocturnal Winds, Lord Belial and Wallakia.

well, Emperor is better, but kind of crappy at the last albums. Dimmu's first 2 albums were acceptable. Anyway, i listen to Emperor, Negura Bunget, Sort Vorker.(black metal).. And i think death metal is the most evolved metal genre :P

When you say leftist music, i remember metal... From grindcore to power, it seems leftist to me...
I like marduk, napalm death, opeth, carcass... You?
Metal isn't really leftist, just not right.
Most metal is apathetic, but there are certainly some leftist metal bands.
And I can't say I've ever heard of a right-wing metal band.

Most of the time I find metal boring.
The best metal band of all time is Spinal tap.
No one mentioned KMFDM, they are openly Communist, I like them...they aren't boring.
I hate Black Metal, its a bunch of over-technical, neo-nazi, pagan, asshole bands who all sound the same, who wish they were living in the 7th century. Get a grip its the 21st first century you reactionary assholes. If we went back to that time, you think you'd be able to play your electric guitars?

nu-metal(crap-metal) is a mixture of PROGRESSIVE ROCK+RAP.
Metal is not the same thing with metal, renember. They called it "nu-metal" to counter-balance the dissapearance of good heavy metal

Good bands -
Children of Bodom
Cradle of Filth
Norther
HIM (Fuck the reputation, I like them)
Deicide
Dimmu Borgir
Ektomorf
Random bits of other stuff, but they're my top bands. CoB, CoF and Deicide are my favourites.
