What's a redneck?

Well, my first impression was that a redneck was the anme give to people who worked in the hot Southern US sun all day, therefore getting their necks burnt by the sun. The name stuck to white Southerners and know is a derogaratory term meaning "degenerate, Republican troglodyte". Heres what Wiki said it meant -

its a stereotype of people here in the south making them out to be conservative, white trash, nascar fans. but the world is stereotypical so i dont use it.

The answer to this is: A very conservative person that lives in the Bible Belt (south eastern US) and strictly follows the Protestant faith and is very closedminded to other beliefs and ways of life.

I heard that originally the redneck thing came from those settlers that came to the south of North America in search for oil and due to the fact this requires looking down alot of the time (though i not sure of the process involved in finding oil back then was), this exposes the back of the neck and it got sunburnt quite often. Perhaps just a rumour but thats what I heard.
