Your field can only really help whoever you are working for at a given point. I'd say, do your job and then get involved with grassroots politcs or the anti-war movement and so on and see that as they way to change things.
All technology goes to help the capitalists even if it has the potential to do much more than that. For example, look at digital media... now everyone with a computer and internet could theoretically have acess to great music, films, news, communication, digitized versions of great paintings and so on very easily with no waste or use of paper products and so on. Instead, you see big business trying to tighten its grip over who gets to have acess to what. Part of this is to control "copyright" and part of this is just to control acess and what information gets out there at all.
I knew a lot of people who, in the early 90s, believed that information technologies would really bring about a huge chqange in our society and massive democratization. And for a small ammount of people this happened for a short while, but now the "net" is run by the system rather that being an alternative to it.
So, in short, get a job and do it to support yourself and get money, not to try and bring about a revolution from your job. Help communism, by joining your union and being politically active.
