why mars? what's wrong with the ultimate south?
i would actually support leaving the coasts alone as nature sactuaries, but the inlands and the mountains are fair game.
evolutionarily speaking, one of the ways that mutualism comes about is when a group of organisms must struggle against the environment, instead of against each other.

Well, Colonising the deep south of Antarctica would be an interesting engineering challenge - why anyone would want to though is a mystery.
Setting up a prospecting/mining colony in the middle of Antarctica would be a useful exercise for later missions on Mars - like Antarctica, Mars is cold, dry and very harsh.

No one will ever take Antartica from the penguins. It is our revolutionary duty to protect it for its rightful owners and, when the time comes, take up arms with our flightless comrades. The penguins deserve a nation to call their own, and any attempt at colonization by humans should be seen as an attack on their land, cultural traditions, and self-determination. The day a penguin has to cross a motorway to arrive at his mating ground is the day I die; likely gunned down by federal agents as I attempt to elimate the newly-appointed governer.

It was my attempt at pointing out the ridiculessness of 'Antartic colonization' through sheer wit. Appearently I'm just not very good at being clever or funny.

Is there land underneath the ice? It would put a different spin on the question if there wasn't because there'd be no point colonizing Antarctica if the Bushies get their way.

I found that quite amusing myself.
Anyways i think colonizing or setting up some kind of mining operation would be good training for future colonization of a planet, because lets face it were gonna have to leave this rock someday if we want to survive even if it is in a few billion years.

No it wasn't, it was a stupid attempt at humour. That stuff belongs in Chit Chat.
Nobody is colonising Antarctica any time soon - numerous claims have been made on the land but the UN has refused to recognise any of them.
Also, the middle of Antarctica is a desert like no other. There is no living thing there except a few mosses and lichens.

According to Google there is. (http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=Antarctica&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images)
There are extensive ice sheets on the edges of Antarctica, giving the impression of there being no land.

Satire can have a point—often an unequivocally poignant one; and although you could not appreciate any subtext to my post (admittedly, I'm no Swift), I think it's a bit arrogant to declare any such attempt as 'stupid', 'spam', and belonging only to chit-chat.

Colonizing antartica would be as idiotic as colonizing the moon or mars, we do not need to spend billions of dollars for (in my opinion) some worthless pursuit while the money could be spent much more usefull here.

Colonising Antarctica is really pointless - there is enough room for billions more on the habitable continents.
However, as it is a continent that was once near the equator as part of Pangea, it may have massive resources - oil, gas, coal, gold, ores, etc.
As there is no wildlife inland, this could be a valuable resource.

So, what was the subtext apart from a load of bullshit about penguins? You realise it would make more sense, from both an economic and environmental perspective, to colonise the centre of Antarctica where there's nothing but lichen to keep you company?

Yeah, cause we all know that metals and minerals are worthless

I think we have some bigger problems to worry about on this planet before we go to another. We're not done with this one, even though it does seem to be going straight back to the beginning....Only it won't be as nice.

That creating large civilian settlements in the Antartic is kind of an absurd proposition at present, which I tried to acknowledge by juxtaposing it with an equally comical reaction.
At any rate, you obviously did not find the post amusing or of any substance to the discussion; but I just wanted to point out that it was not written merely as an empty attempt at humour. I appreciate your criticism, but don't believe that you nor anyone else really gets the word on what defines an acceptable or unacceptable shot at satire.

Apparently, they're having trouble keeping things on top of the ice. If you build anything, it will probably be underground in a few decades. Colonizations sounded cool when we knew nothing about the place, but after exploring it, it just seems pointless. It's the worst desert on the planet with nothing to support complex organisms.

I think that Bush would like this one, creating a large colony of hippies and anarchists in antarctica. I think that he may even fund it. Can I make a suggestion: Elephant Island!
you better make sure that you bring harpoons to hunt walrus and whale, because depending on agriculture for a place that has no sun light for 1/2 a year may be a lil difficult.
