And no one could care less.

The environment is always the first thing to take down civilization, but the last thing that civilization has prioritized. Hell, the US would rather increase workers rights and freedoms than clean up emission levels.

I don't think the US has any intention of increasing anyone rights or freedoms anytime soon. But yeah, people have a tendancy to underestimate climatic changes.

Yeah the cold does suck. Global Warming isn't working that well, apparently, because I'm already starting to freeze my ass off here in Chicago.

Global warming doesn't really make the world hotter all year round. It actualy makes the weather more extreme, hotter summers, colder winters.

Sucks how civilization doesnt care about the enviroment much untill it's to late.

This is bad news for you, what with all that fresh water stopping the gulf stream and all! :P

In that case it would be climate change and not global warming (A misleading term)

However it remains to be seen whether climate change is caused by human activities or not.

True, but its best not to wait and see. Surely?
The evidence does seem to point in the direction of us humans though. It would be a very large coincidence if the temperature, carbon dioxide, methane, and Nitrous oxide levels all rising in the same way at the same time wasn't the fault of us.

I think it's absolutely horrible that this is occurring and that the superpowers of this dying planet could care less, but I would really want to know what they could do to stop it. In the amount of time it would take to lower the amount of emissions put into our atmosphere, it would be too late to stop anything disastrous. The damage has already been done, and will only continue to be done thanks to the 'more more more' attitude of 95% of this planets population. Even after something disastrous happens, nothing will be done, well....unless of course its because of those "goddarn terrists agin"

its not like we'd be the first civilization to go down because we didnt care about the environment until it was too late. over farming has done that before, but the consequences weren't globa. the problem is, conservatives and capitalists will continue to say that global warming is a myth until it is too late

its not like its going to make winters warm, it just increases the temperature levels slowly, which i am also in illinois and can feel the difference, It was much hotter this year in august than last. and in AZ its already unihabitable

Zapata
9th October 2005, 16:55
yeah the problem with global warming is that it happens slowly enough that pro-business advocates and conservatives can deny its existence without being proved wrong easily. then you've got all the people who say its natural

OK, OK SO LET ME RECAP THIS.

THE POLAR ICE CAPS ARE MELTING FAST WITH GLOBAL WARMING

IE. MORE CO2, GREENHOUSE GASES, CH4, ECT. (LESS TREES LESS O2)

THE UVB RAYS FEEL HOT WITH A DEPLEATED O3 (OZONE LAYER)

SAY WHAT, THE OCEAN WILL RISE AND FLOOD IN COMBINATION WITH MORE STRONG LOW PRESSURE STORMS FLOOD SPECIFIC LOW LEVEL GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS WITH HIGH POPULATIONS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

Zapata
25th October 2005, 01:55
if nothing is done that is a probable outcome. but the problem is it happens gradually enough that those who do not wish to believe in its existence can deny it without substantial evidence. if it happened all at once, it would be obvious. instead, people will resist acting until it is too late

Than your shit of luck, comrade. Despite the name 'global warming', the phenomenon could actually lead to a new ice age (yes, just like the movie The
Day After Tomorrow ... parts are accurate). The movie actually tells the truth, I believe. If oceans fill with so much fresh water, the ocean streams that give some northern nations their Mediterrarean climates could disappear (for example, an ocean stream is the only reason Britain has a cool, not cold, climate). Of course, if you move to the southern hemisphere well inland, than be not afraid of global warming.

If the arctic melts, then we would have no problems with rising sea levels since the mass of ice does already float on the sea, pressuring it. The ice on Greenland and the mainland part of the Antarctic are another, more disturbing issue.

We would probably have to evacuate people from the cities at the coastlines.

If you take The Day After Tomorrow seriously, I cannot take you seriously.

That movie was crap.

I was told that when snow falls over land and it doesn't melt quickly enough, it reflects sunlight back up or some crap and it prompts more snow to fall and so forth.

But seriously, that movie is to climate change is what Big Bird is to advanced mathematics. Seriously.

P.S, I'm being serious

Doesnt the climate on earth just change because of nature? I mean 3 centuries or so ago we had a minor ice age in Europe. Now things heat up a bit. Im not denying the problem here, because air pollution is a problem, but lately Ive seen that there are two sides...well extremes. One side of enviromentalists who want to obtain money and other forms of support for their theories which are not fully proven. And on the other side we have people who fully deny the warming or anything in that matter.

climate change does occur naturally - no one is saying that it doesn't. however, it is a process that we are accelerating

temperatures have always varied - but never have they done so to such an extent so quickly

wonder what will occur first -- global warming and a new ice age or the extinction level asteroid collision in 2036? They ruled out the hit for 2019 to about 6 in a million.

True but some rapid changes have occurred in the past, the minor ice age a few centuries back is an example. Perhaps the rapid increase of temperature could be an another case of this change.

The Little Ice Age wasn't really a rapid change and scientists have shown that it was caused by low solar activity and followed the Medieval Climate Optimum.

The Arctic has been melting for a while now but it has been only recently that this issue has become more emphasized. One of the reasons for this is that now the Northwest Passage does exist and no longer just a dream of the English. Also, another issue with global warming is that it could cause another ice age as others have already mentioned by shutting down thermohaline circulation or the ocean conveyor belts. Earth has undergone major weather shifts and cycles before due to natural causes but these recent changes in Earth's climate can't be attributable to those factors alone.
