If you can't afford a real iPod then you should consider making your own.

Everything you need to know is at the link below
http://www.techdesign.be/projects/020/020.htm

That is a freaking great link!....But oh shit do you think anybody can actually understand what the heck they're talking about?

Damn I skimmed through the directions ("schematics"?) and and I read words like "capacitor", "RS232 bootloader connector" and I have no idea what the fuck this means: "The 18LF452 or 18LF458 has to run at 20 MhZ due to the serial interface with the MMC. PLL cannot be used, cause it only works from 4V2."!

Neat link but you have be a student at like MIT to be able to figure it out :(

Exactly.

You have to be like a total nerd to be able to follow those instructions.

RS 232 is just a type of Serial Cable.

How 'bout this:

All the cool commie nerds who understand that greek can make a bunch then sell them to all of us at a reasonable price.

It's not hard to learn to read schematics if you're interested in it.

btw. Has anyone done a run down on the required prices to find an average price for everything required?

Oh, here's (http://www.techdesign2.be/shop/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=86&osCsid=3d4294d5f6e6573c9e08229ac2b2e007) the "Fully assembled and 100% tested PCB." All you need then would be the headphones, memory card, battery & box.. they have that for sale too!

€89,54

What's that in dollars?

It does get expensive when you have to buy the memory cards that aren't included.

Roughly, the DIY Ipod costs $134.31, however they are quite worth it if you want to avoid the apple corporation. Inform tech-savvy people you know so we can make these in Amerika for less (and save on shipping)

Fucking hell. I bet, in the time it takes the average Joe to read and comprehend the circuit diagram I could have busked long enough to buy 2 iPods. You'd really have to hate Apple to try this....

A basic electrician can read those schematics.

That's only a fucking circuit diagram! it takes 5 minutes to learn how to read one of those!

You don't need to know exactly what the parts do; just ask for them at Radio Shack and follow the instructions as to where you solder them.

It might help if you borrowed a library book on basic electronics.

But surely learning a useful skill like electronics is more important than putting money into the pockets of Apple Corp?

Whoever said that "a basic electrician" could read those is out of his head. I'm not saying they're the most complicated thing ever, I'm sure I could pick up a book and learn, but I worked as an electrician for years and never encountered anything like that, this has nothing to do with that kind of work.

You must have been a very poor electrician. Did you ever learn how to read a circuit diagram?

I learned how to read and build basic circuit diagrams in seventh grade. Maybe all you need is a high school electronics class to know ho to read one of those.
