View Full Version : Che epic?

For my English class we have to write an epic and my teacher let us choose our main character.
So I chose Che.
And then I figured out what a pain in the ass it's going to be to write an eight page poem about the Cuban revolution.
Somehow I have to include interaction with a gods/goddesses, two Homeric similes, five archetypal characteristics, the hero's return to the point of departure, and a satisfying ending.
So, if anyone is good at poetry, suggestions/help would be much apprediated.

Wow that God part will be hard to pull off, seeing Che was an atheist. But CHe's life is archtypical when compared to the hero's journey in relationship to Joseph Campbells, Hero with a thousand faces and his study of myths. His work would make a great basis for an outline.

Pleae let us see it when you have completed it.

"In fact, if Christ himself stood in my way, I, like Nietzsche, would not hesitate to squish him like a worm" - Che

Perhaps you could talk about how God or something "heavenly" (a metaphor for luxury) tried to tempt him, but that he rejected it and fought against it for the sake of mankind. That he knocked it unconscious with the hammer and beheaded it with the sickle.

Good luck with that. I agree with Debora Aro that you must post it once its finished. By the way, whats a Homeric similie?

A Homeric simile is an extended simile like what Homer used in The Iliad and The Odyssey
Here's an example form The Odyssey:
"as a blacksmith plunges a glowing ax or adze
in an ice-cold bath and the metal screeches steam
and its temper hardens—that’s the iron’s strength—
so the eye of the Cyclops sizzled round that stake!"
Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Simile"

Oh, and I decided to write it based on The Motorcycle Diaries instead.
Because apparently the hero has to return to the point of departure, and then it will be shorter.

Thanks for explaining what a Homeric simile is. With an example too. :P

The Cuban revolutionaries left from Bolivia. Che's own personal revolution ended in Bolivia. A full circle.

the hero's return to the point of departure, and a satisfying ending.

The end of the Motorcycle Diaries isn't really a satisfying ending. He returns to Argentina to finish his studies and become a doctor. Its an anti ending of sorts.

Also I just thought. If you wrote about the Cuban Revolution. You could start with him landing in Cuba and end with his remains, returning to Cuba.

I had to write almost the same thing, but I didn't write it about Che. Instead I made up my own fictional character and wrote an epic about him. It was right after we read the Odyssey.

Excellent idea.

Well, thank you.

I do tend to get a good idea about once a month, usually on a Tuesday.

I'm doing it based on The Motorcycle Diraies because it's more of a journey than the Cuban revolution. And its easier to write and epic about a journey.

I finished my rough draft.
I'll try to post it late tonight.
