View Full Version : A few easy things you could do
Karl Marx's Camel

Don't buy CD's or computer games
Download them instead. Not only do you save money, but you are not giving your money away to large corporations.
Lately, I have downloaded two games, Starcraft with the expansion pack, and Rise of Nations. Starcraft was a little blurry the first 20 seconds or so, but now it is fine. Rise of Nations, I downloaded it, and only slight, very slight problems with the sound once in a while. I've also downloaded some very good movies. You don't have to rent or buy a movie anymore. CD's.. I maybe buy one CD a year. Why waste money on a CD, when you can get it for free? Imagine how much money you could save. It's a reason why corporations are so much against file sharing.

Switching to linux, get it online.
Turn off lights in the other rooms while you are on the computer.

Its not too bad. You can run some Windows stuff through an emulator, but otherwise its a whole nother ball game. Still worth the time to learn though :)
You can always put linux on dual boot and look into it while using windows for everyday stuff.

Lindows (sp?) is supposed to be similar and quite compatable, although I don't know anyone with it.

if you ride a bus write graffiti on the back of the seats with a permanent marker. The busses near me go all over the state in a day and I usually write something everytime I ride. If you really have guts take down an ad poster, flip it over, write something on the back and put it back up. Guerilla advertising!

Dont use Internet Explorer
Try using Mozilla Firefox or Opera
How is that contributing? I am not opposed to the idea, I just don't understand why it could be to our advantage if more people started using Mozilla Firefox or Opera.
I use Mozilla Firefox myself. Much better than Internet Explorer. Never had the virus problem ever again when I switched to mozilla.
But regarding Wikipedia. Look at the site now. Instead of reading "Cuba's economy sucks and Castro is gay and an evil dictator who has crushed Cuba's economy", you will read (first lines in the Economy section):
Cuba's socialist economy is based on state and communal ownership with some small scale private enterprise existing. Since the fall of Cuba's many trading partners, the island has focused on urban communal farms. "Last year alone we produced 27 kilograms of vegetables per square metre. When we first started this farm three years ago it stood at 18 kilograms. And we expect this year's harvest to yield no less than 30 kilograms. That's an increase of around 30% year on year.", says Senora Hernandes, in charge of one of hundreds of small urban farms dotted around Havana. "A recent report by the American agency for sustainable farming, Food First, said annual production of fruit and vegetables is growing at 250% a year." [9]
And I think those things make a big difference, because almost everyone is blaming socialism ("communism") for stagnation of the economy. I made the contribution. And I think those things are important. Maybe I am an idealist, but I think those things can help. Although crazy, Wikipedia as a source has even been used by Western politicians to back up their proof, or used as a so-called "evidence". So I think it has some value.

It has been reverted now, but I ask someone here to revert it back. I have used 3 reverts the past 24 hours, the maximum limit. In order to change back, go to "history", check my username, and it should say, on the same line, the date of the post (for example, my latest post; 19:09, 13 October 2005). Click on the date, you will see a new version of the page pop up. Press "edit the page", and you push the "submit" button.

Well a few things, one Mozilla is safer to use, it has fewer holes in it. And its contributing in the same way editing wikipedia is and switching to linux is.

I hardly ever rip CD's. personally i find it easier to just go to a cheap used record store and purchase decent artists for a couple of bucks. There is something about owning the actual album an artist put out as opposed to a couple of songs or a copy. For example, the songs on most classic albums, like Pink Floyd's The Wall, flow together as one big song, you cant get that by burning or downloading. As well, by buying from used record stores, you arn't paying full price, so you as a consumer arn't getting ripped of by record labels, but you also arent ripping off the musicians and workers who made the album.
I know it sounds like the same excuse that cappies use about deserving something for your work, but in this kind of society, ther isnt much you can do about. I would never buy an album from an artist or a group who only do it for the cash. I will continue to support music and musicians who love music, not the capitalization of it.

Well people can also travel in ways that dont waste that many resources, like say walking or backpacking, and making sure to do their best to respect the environment. I agree with those that advocate using Wikipedia, we could definitely use more comrades around Wiki to try and fight the anti-Left bias that exists on there. As far as everyday things people can do, fall in love, have an adventure, don't let "the man" get you down :)

Its retarded. Whose the real sellout? Games contribute nothing to your life, they waste your braincells and are just mor capitalist propaganda to get you buying more usless shit and teach you that killing and stealing and money money money is where its at. At least music makes you smarter, and doesnt waste your life. I would rather sell out to the music industry then the video game industry any day.

There is music in video games. Also, there is strategy, science, story-telling, computer art, theatre, and a plethora of other things. Video games should not be played for simple fun, but appreciated as art. In MUDs (text-based MMORPGS), you use a combination of reading, strategy, and theatre constantly.
I agree most games aren't intellectualy stimulating. However games like RPGs, strategy games, and any games with good stories are definitely worthy of respect.

Two things to add -
- If you buy a new CD, you will be feeding the record label's swine.
- If you download music, you will be feeding the telephone company's swine (if you are on dial-up) or whoever you paid for your broadband connection swine. Sure, if you happen to access the net for free (minority of cases), you'll still have to pay for the means to listen to the music - HD, i-pod's, or whatever.
Unfortunally, there aren't many ways to "get away with it" today.
Buying used CD's and LP's are a good alternative, but people tend NOT to sell good music. Actually LP's are wonderful these days - you can find some "preetee good" stuff really cheap.
I love music, and I won't stop buying it, used or new. Sure, I download, but mostly bootlegs. And it's not the same thing, you know... you can't tell the difference on headphones or desktop speakers, but when you burn a CDR and play it on the stereo...
Too bad there aren't public MUSIC libraries... any graduation student knows it's a blessing to have access to excellent text books for free. Imagine an analogous for music?
About video-games, well I played a LOT when I was younger. I still play EMULATED systems when I'm bored (it's free, so why such a big deal on this?). It didn't stop ME to continue to improve my intelectual activities, you know. It can hurt your social skills though...
An idea about the fancy sports car - if you drive and find one behind you, try do to the best NOT letting them pass you on the streets like paralleling your car (the older the better - it will make them more pissed off) with another one. It's not the fancy car that really makes me mad, it's the "I'm better than these skunks" attitude that really "begs" these pigs to be shot down.
