A freeware alternative to Photoshop and MS Paint
The Washington State University has released Paint.Net 2.0, a free image and photo manipulation software for Windows. The software offers many features which make it a serious competitor to other free and even commercial imaging solutions. On the website you find a selection of tutorials, which should make it easy for beginners and for people switching to Paint.Net.”

PAINT.net is supposed to be a more advanced MS Paint. I use it for its simplicity and features.

Then look for programs for linux that are packaged as .rpm and post links here, freshmeat and sourceforge would be good places to start looking.
Also, as you're using linux I assume you can compile source code?

What do you mean by 'safe place'? PS is widely available for DL on peer-to-peer software, limewire for example.
Of course i am not suggesting that you download software illegally :)

Of course not
Talking hypothetically of course, torrent networks would also be a possible means to download a copy of photoshop - for example if they went on to a website like this (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) downloaded the application and then went to a website like this (http://www.isohunt.com) and downloaded a torrent from there for the latest copy of photoshop - then opening it up in Azureus... would be a perfectly viable method to download photoshop...
Not that I endorse such actions

you can download the 30-day trial 100% legally from Adobe's Website. It's the Activation part that is almost...uh..kinda....illegal... You can find Keygens and serials for it anywhere - i Might (JUST MIGHT) be able to send you a working keygen, but ...I can't make any promises....Maybe I have one, Maybe I don't....;) You might even be able to ask me for help using the keygen that MAY or MAY NOT exist......, not that i'd help someone break the law or anything....
But Just for the record:
PIRACY IS WRONG! DON'T DO IT...
That being said, Godspeed Comrade.
And CBM989, the GIMP has an Animation Plugin you can download from GIMP.org. IMHO, it's even better than Adobe ImageReady
P.S. Sorry for ressurecting an old post guys. I have a habit of screwing thing up.

I used that in my GCSE graphics class... well, actually I didn't - it was on the school system, I didn't like it all that much, so I just did my graphics at home on photoshop...
I dont think photoplus is freeware is it?

Open Office Draw is a pretty good opensource alternative to Adobe Illustrator. And in 2.3 (the latest version) you can export to Scalable Vector Graphic format.
Scribus is an alternative to Adobe InDesign, and you can make graphics there as well.
As for Photoshop alternates, I don't know any, but I have Photoshop 7.0 so I've been looking for other programs.

The only GIF animator I know of is Adobe ImageReady. It's bundled with Photoshop and can be downloaded from torrent sites.
:) Or you can be a good little boy or girl and pay $300 for it at Adobe.com :)

I've taken to Art of Illusion for 3-D work -- it's often passed-over and seems to be a well-kept secret, even on the net. It's robust, cross-platform, enterprise-quality, and freeware -- quite impressive...!

Okay if you want to compile from source code it's fairly straight forward and if anyone looks over your shoulder whilst you are doing it you look like an uber hacker :)
First off download the source code to a folder you will be happy to keep it in, I have a folder called /progs that I put code and what not in. When you download source code it normally comes as a tarball .tgz (or summat similar) extract the code by right clicking and selecting extract here. Now open a terminal and navigate to the folder the code is extracted to.
home~ ]$ cd /prgs/randomcode/
now you need to cinfigure the code to create a make file
./configure
this could take a few minutes so go put the kettle on next we have to run the make file by typing
make
You should now have time to go make your cup of tea when you get back you should be back at the command prompt. Now as root type
make install
tada! Assuming you have all the dependencies for the software the program should install.
If you are lacking any dependencies , such as a c++ compiler they should be in your repositries and can be installed via your package manager.
Hope that helps. btw Are you using Suse? Yeuch.
On the topic of free graphics programs Xara has released a Linux version (http://www.xaraxtreme.org/) that is freeware and amazing.
It uses the autopackage installer which is quite neat if you don't like compiling programmes yourself.

MyPaint is a good piece of software for digital painters: mypaint.intilinux(D0T)com // i can't post links due to not having enough posts it says, sorry if i broke the rules but its easier i just give the url.
I have used it, is fairly new but still an amazing program. Its trying to get more support to be put into main distribution repos, its already in Debian unstable/testing and Sidux under art repos.

As part of the total transitioning of my graphics workflow from the Mac platform to Linux I've come across the need to take 2-D vectors and create 3-D extruded versions from them, so that they can be saved as OBJ files and used in any arbitrary 3-D modeling and rendering applications.
I finally found a workflow for this that begins with Xara Xtreme and allows me to import the 3-D shapes into my modeling program of choice, Art of Illusion.
1. *Print* your artwork from Xara using ctrl-P from the keyboard. Set up the options to print to a .ps file.
2. Use Okular to open the .ps file as a PDF file, and save it out as a .pdf file.
3. Open the .pdf file in Inkscape with default options and save it out as the default, Inkscape SVG file.
4. Use an older, 2.49 or earlier, version of Blender to import the Inkscape .svg file. With the object selected go to the Editing button (F9) in the Buttons Window and set the DefResolU to 6. Click the right arrow button on Extrude once to give it a thickness, or set the value as desired. You can export to an OBJ file with options set as desired -- I keep only the 'Selection Only' and 'Objects' buttons selected.

NeoTextureEdit
NeoTextureEdit is an open source (GNU LGPL v. 3) easy to use graph-based procedural seamless texture editor. Using continuous basis functions it can generate arbitrary resolution images without quality degradation. Its main purpose is to produce high quality textures for real time rendering applications that can be stored in a few kB and synthesized on application startup. But it can also be used to generate off-line images.
NeoTextureEdit is a cross-platform application that runs on Windows, Linux and MacOSX.
