My history teacher, whos a drummer, sore me and my band play at school the other day, he said to lisen to some stuff by The Jam cos they were punk (our bands not punk but I'll lisen to anything) but they were more polished than the sex pistols and The Clash etc. Whats there best album or a good EP or something, thanks.

Well I only know Sound Affects and All Mod Cons, the first one of them is clearly better (and a classic) if you ask me. Btoh seem to be amongst their 3 or 4 better ones. All Mod Cons should probably be your first one.

All Mod Cons is their best album with Setting Sons a close second.
Or if you just want a best of compilation get a copy of Snap!

All Mod Cons is their classic album (although I don't have it).
Setting Sons is bloody brilliant (best songs, Little Boy Soldiers, Wasteland, Burning Sky, Eton Rifles and Thick as Thieves Hold on a tick, that's half the album).
Sound Affects is excellent.
The first album, In The City has some very good songs.

Compilation-wise, Extras has b-sides, alternate versions and unreleased material,

If you want to splash out on a DVD, The Complete Jam has all the videos (or most of them anyway) plus TV appearances. If you get this watch out for the guy on Dutch TV.

The Jam's drummer Rick Buckler is now playing in a Jam tribute band called The Gift.

And Bruce Foxton plays with Stiff Little Fingers I think.

I would definitely not call the Jam punk. More like, seminal mod rock.

Beat Surrender? Isn't that their greatest hits? Plus, isn't Paul weller solo stuff supposed to be pretty class as well?

Yes, Beat Surrender is on their greatest hits. It was their last ever single and their 4th No.1 hit.

Paul Weller's solo stuff is a bit hit and miss. His first 3 albums (Paul Weller, Wild Wood & Stanley Road) are pretty good but I haven't been too keen on his albums since then. Paul Weller has a new album out in a few weeks which has been getting some decent reviews. So, maybe I'll check that out.

I saw them live a while back. I must admit I wasn't that impressed and left the gig early.
