It doesn't take a in depth look to see that mountains between the Mid-West and the Atlantic Coast have been an economic waste land long strifed with poverty. It doesn't take a far look back into history to see that the moutaineers was never paid fully for the weight that they put into their coal mining, the leading industry in the mountains since 19th century. In some instances, they was never even paid legal tender; they was given 'script' which was used to by food from the store owned by the coal company. It was a corporate-owned feutal society, with the mountaineer playing the part of the serf.

Of course, things in Applachia changed, right? LBJ's war on poverty worked, didn't it?

Not Really.

Have a read. (http://www.post-gazette.com/headlines/20001126appalachiamainnat2.asp)

Take a look at this while you're at it. (http://newstandardnews.net/content/?action=show_item&itemid=565)

So, I ask both my comrades and the cappies; what do you think about the nature of the mountains I grew up in? Tell me what kind of 'fair and just' capitalist society allows families (such as mine for quiet some time), to live without indoor plumbing or undrinkible water. What kind of justice is their when a family lays entriched in poverty for generations? The only signifigent difference being that the Applachian in 1935 and 2005 is now the Mountaineer has 500 channels, Playstation and crystal meth to take the sting of out his/her oppression.

..?

Maybe I got a little over emotional with the post. Allow me to rephrase the question.

How would you cappies solve the problems in Applachia?

Hell, let's get the commies and annies in on this one! I'm always up for a good debate.
