I was talking to someone the other day, and the topic was world travel. They opened my eyes about something that I'm ashamed to say I had forgotten: what we learn when we travel.

Since 9-11 and especially since the Bali bombing, the Australian media has been subtly promoting a negative feeling amongst the locals - that we shouldn't travel anywhere, because it isn't safe.

While talking to the person the other day, we both came to the conclusion that now is the time that we SHOULD be travelling. For the exact reason that it's not safe. People are frightened, scared of the unknown.

You're not going to get over the unknown if you don't face it head on. And the only way you're going to face it is if you go out there and experience it. It's a well-known fact that travellers are amongst the most tollerant people upon the planet? Why? Because they put themselves in situations where they learn about other people and places, live amongst other people, talk to other people. All out of the so-called safety of their own society.

So get out there and break down the barriers. Teach those around you that global tollerance is more important than sitting in your homes feeling afraid about things you don't understand. The more you sit around, the more the government has control over your emotions, your decisions, your future.

Make the effort to break that awful cycle.

Moscow and St. Petersburg are very beautifel. You should see the gaurdswitch. Mausoleum, Bolsjoi theater(altough you have to reserve months before). I love that city.

My ultimate plan in life (besides a revolution of course) is to travel to every country in the world. It would probably take about 10 years straight travelling but I'll probably just take in a few countries on every trip. I don't really want to plan everything, I'd prefer to take it at my own pace and just work and make money on the way around.

BornofZapatasGuns: How about instead of doing that, you visit every site on national geographics historical list? I think that would be a better thing to do.

I planned to make a trip of a year. Hopefully Moscow and St. Petersburg haven't changed too much since their "liberation of the communist regime".

Quote from CCCP:
I am planning to make a cheap world travel when I am ready with studies and school. What are ur plans? My plans are two-fold. Firstly, I'll be moving into the area of International Development and Humanitarian Aid over the next couple of years so will have the opportunity to work within Third World nations. Secondly, my choice of holiday would be of a similar idea - for years I've wanted to see the poorer nations more than the richer ones.

I think that would be a better thing to do.It's an option worth looking into, absolutely. For a lot of people, it's the better option - I guess it really comes down to who we are and what we want out of our experiences. Myself, I'm like BOZG - I want to be out there experiencing the world properly. The idea of travelling endlessly for 10 years is, quite frankly, bliss to me, too.

Everything you said is bang on Angie.
I plan to go to Bali next year sometime. To let the Balinese know the world is still out there and see for myself what life there is like.
Interestingly I found while researching for my trip that something like 20,000+ chinese communists were killed there in the 50's and 60's.

I've been to bali. Its very sad. Rich tourists against a backdrop of local poverty.

Nice beachs though, often covered with topless european tourists ;)
