The topic says it all.
Should New Orleans be rebuilt to it's former days before the hurricane or not? What are the pros and cons of it having rebuilt? Any statistics on this matter would be helpful for I am doing a report on school relating to Hurricane Katrina and it is always good to hear someone else's viewpoint on the matter.

I think it would be nice to see it rebuilt in its former glory, New Orleans always was a very beautiful city in my opinion. However, they should just build some better protection against the sea, similar to what we have here in Holland perhaps...

Of course the should rebuild it. Hopefully the government can rebuild all the houses that were destroyed and give them back to all the families that lost them. And this time around, implement a backup plan so the people have some where to go when these kind of storms strike again.

NO should be rebuilt - people need a place to live, and they won't get that where they have been evacuated to. Many of these people left NO with absolutly nothing - making a new life in a different city away from their community will be hard, and their quality of life would be lower than what it was before.
The state should foot the entire bill to completly rebuild NO, but not to what it was like before - it should be better. No expense should be spared, but it should not be up to the federal government as to how NO is planned.
All planing should be made by local communities, their organisations, and the unions.

Built by whom? If you tell me billionaire republican backed construction companies, which they prob are, then no. If you tell me black owned black ran, black employed construction companies, especially based in that area i'mma say yes.

Why should it be rebuilt? More people will only die when another hurricane hits it.

If people decide to build things there, then it will be rebuilt. Mainly capitalist class people, of course.

NO should NOT be rebuilt. It's one of the most corrupt cities in the nation. It's own mayor and police subjugate the poor by their welfare programs and make sure they stay poor. The city was dirty, crime ridden, and a bore. The majority of the cost of rebuilding will come from taxpayers who were NOT stupid enough to live in a place that dangerous.
NO has become the world's largest toxic waste dump also. Right now there is NOT one building that is not suffering an infestation of black mold. Let's examine what would have to be done to insure the safety of people living there:
1. EVERY, and I mean EVERY building would have to be demolished because of the mold.
2. The ground would have to be cleared by digging up and replacing it.
3. NO would have to be filled with enough fill to raise it above the level of the surrounding water.
4. Environmental activists would have to be muzzled so that the delta could be rebuilt. One of the biggest problems is that the delta has shrunk because it could not be replenished through normal means (floods).
5. A system of dikes and levees would have to be built that would rival those of Holland.
6. The cost of rebuilding could be paid directly to the residents and each would receive approximately $200,00. Easy way to get rid of poverty

It's a hard question to answer. On one side you have people who want to try and restore the city of New Orleans, to it's former glory. On the other side you have people who see that rebuilding New Orleans, is economically and health wise ridiculous. Both sides are right, but it too would be great to see New Orleans up again. Maybe if the system that was being built for storm protection would have been completed, this question wouldn't have to come up. If some of the money beign wasted on this "War" would be invested in New Orleans, maybe it could be rebuilt.

I shudder to think how much money would be wasted on rebuilding NO in its present spot. I say wasted because the next storm that hits (and at this rate it won't be too far away) will simply destroy the everything again. Perhaps move the city a few miles away where its not sandwiched between a lake and a river, both of which have waterlevels higher than much of the city.
Of course considering the current state of the US budget what are the odds of anything being done at all? Call me cynical if you want but I imagine that the city will be rebuilt as it was with a few minor improvements to the flood defences. By then the public will have forgotten about the need and all the officials will be in new jobs. Everything will be just rosy... until the next storm hits.

NO may just become the underground city, with the New NO on top.
I dont think it should be rebuilt period. Instead I think it all should be turned into wetlands, the way it originally was. This would also help clean up all that toxic waste, because wetlands have their own filtering system.

It should be rebuilt, allright, yes.
By a bunch of revolutionaries, that is, in a funky-ass town
who is used for a stage-base to eat America up from within.
Then we'll just proceed from'ere :P
