Nicaraguas left-wing Sandinista party plans to buy oil from Venezuela in the councils they control, at a forty percent discount.

This oil deal could substantially benefit the Sandinistas if it goes ahead, perhaps showing the Nicaraguan people that if they vote Sandinista again, they will not be isolated.

Neat. If you have to get gas, Citgo is the way to go, it goes to the Venezuelan government.

Oh what will the US do against this? Sounds like a potential return of Reagan-esque times with Contras

A war may be on the cards soon. Or as Bush would put it, a "liberation".

I don't think Contras could be funded again against a possible Sandinista govt - the conditions aren't the same as in the 80's.

Well the US can always find (read: make) an excuse, perhaps they would claim that the Sandanistas have connections with Bin Laden or whatever, or let a US ship be attacked by the "sandanistas", they pulled that similar trick in Vietnam, just attack themselves and then claim the enemy did it in order to get popular support.

Dunno how they'd attack Nicaragua effectively seeing as they are stuck in Iraq

Well they dont have to use the same tactic as Iraq, they would just have a military organisation there, like the contras who they support. In Iraq they have a large occupation force and I dont know what else which makes things complicated.

In Nicaragua they could just isolate the country, bombard it with state sponsored terrorism in the form of terrorist, but also chemical and biological warfare (just look at Vietnam for examples for chemical warfare), weaken the country to such a level that the US could put anybody into power who they want.

I don't think the US would start a war with either Nicaragua or Venezuela at this point. More likely would be the sending of CIA operatives to train death squads and paramilitaries and the like.

Im not talking about direct war, the US policy towards Latin America has always (well almost always) been indirect, however the US would supply some more support this time (bombardements etc)
