Kill 'em All of course. Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All are all good ones too. The Black Album is somewhate decent, but after that one they seriously suck. Don't even bother listening to anything after that one.

Has to be master of puppets. I'm not their biggest fan but that's deffinatley the best one.

Ride the lightning... I think its the only Metallica CD for which I like all of its songs
Kill em All comes shortly after, then Master...

Master of Puppets was the best regarding their thrash sound. And, coming out in the golden year of thrash (1986) that's saying a good deal that we still remember it.
I am no Metallica fan (money-hungry bastards), but in their thrash days, you could listen to a lot worse.

I suspected the first five would be the better ones. And yes, I know a very misinformed guy who bought Reload, much to his regret. To paraphrase him : Worst shit ever

Ride the Lightning - there is not one track on it that isn't absolutely fucking brilliant!
Its probably my favorite album ever! You just can not beat classic thrash-metal!

You know me?
I made the mistake of buying ReLoad as my first Metallica album. After that I thought they were shit, but then I heard Enter Sandman, and my soul was saved.

If you can afford it...please buy all their albums. They are cool..and it's cool to have all their works in your collection.
Peace

I can't really narrow it down to one, but I would have to say that it is either Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. Also, don't bother getting any post-Black Album ones; they are awful. I like their older music, but I hate the band members as people (they care more about money than anything. They got so pissed off at the old, free Napster when they already had so many millions of Dollars. Scum.).

Don't - that is such a waste of money. Anything post-black album is shit - they're like a different band on Load to what they were on Master of Puppets.
Buy Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and Metallica. Live Shit; Binge and Purge is pretty good too, but expensive.
im not a heavy metal fan
You should be... :P

The "Black" album sucks balls, and not in a good way, as does every album that followed it. I'm not a big fan but "Ride the Lightning" is their best.

My first experience with Metallica was the Black Album, which I still think is their best work. The songs aren't as long or fast, but they are generally more thoughtful than their previous work, at least lyrically. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I did enjoy Load. It certainly wasn't their normal material but it provided some good listening. Everything beyond that however has just gone quickly down hill. I wouldn't even think of purchasing St. Anger. Really, S&M isn't too bad. I have a soft spot for the orchestrated sound though, so the already good songs are usually made better and it even turns some of the lamer ones into decent listens.
In reality, I wouldn't suggest buying any of them... See if a friend can burn you a copy, or download some of their stuff as they certainly don't deserve the money now days.

Hmm... quizzical that you think that. <_<
Personally, I found the Black album far to much astray from the thrash, that they had soul when doing. Once they strayed, it all went away from what they seemed most passionate doing.
St. Anger is the final nail in the coffin for me.

The Black Album definately wasn't thrash, I'll admit, but it was good. If you want the thrash/speed Metallica then the Black Album certainly is not the place to begin. When I want that kind of thing though, I usually go for Slayer or Wizard instead;)
