they're some really cool indie-type band from the 80s. kurt cobain felt very often that nirvana was just some shitty vaselines cover band, among their shared repertoire is jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam, son of a gun, and molly's lips. so check them out.

I love the Vaselines.

And unlike the Pixies (another band which greatly influenced Nirvana) they liked Nirvana.

Yup, the Vaselines rock. More than Nirvana I'd say. But that's because at this moment in time I absolutely despise Kurt Cobain.

name more than one song influnced by them

Your call is bullshit he liked htem but they weren't a big influence at all, Eugenius even toured with Nirvana for a while; Kurt remained a fan not an emulator.

Big Black+Melvins+Pixies+The Knack+The Beatles early years as a songwriting dou rahter than as seperate writers+Meat Puppets+Black Flag/any other DC nihilist punk band from the 80's=Nirvana

See any Vaselines there?

I guess I should also chuck in Leadbelly, The Shaggs, Half Japanese, Shonen Knife and Daniel Johnston in there for songwriting honesty and freedom of expression but it's all a lot more minimal unless you're looking for it.

I'd say fairly confidently that not more than one Nirvana song was ever influenced by the Vaselines.

i almost forgot to mention their cover of oliver twisted. count that in with the other 4 songs i mentioned. there are probably more i'm not aware of. why weren't they an influence? nirvana recorded more vaselines songs than any other group whose songs he covered. on released recordings at any rate. don't be so pissy.

didnt kurt get them to reform so nirvana could tour with them?

Dunno, sounds about right; I know Eugenius toured with Nirvana.

I just don't really hear the Vaselines when I listen to Nirvana which is why I asked for more than more than one song that was influenced by them as opposed to covered.

I hate Kurt for several reasons, but mostly because (now doubt inspired by him) my friend, who already has enouygh problems, wants to try heroin. And I know she'll fuck herself up and I'm damn sure she was inspired by the "romantic junkie" image Kurt had.

And I'd say the Vaselines influenced Nirvana, maybe not totally in their direct musical style, but its in there.

Sucks, but you're going to blame your friends idiocy on Kurt Cobain?

I'm pretty sure that if Kurt didn't glorify heroin and she wasn't such a fan that she wouldn't want to take it.

FINALLY!

Anyway where are we now.... oh TFI you are a fucking idiot and in desperate need of being told. So hold on you hate a guy you never met and have judged by what you've read? That's interesting considering that even after the incident in Rome he refused to admit to taking heroin or drugs for the simple reason that he didn't want to glamorize it to anyone since he knew stupid kids looked up to him... which he never asked for. Besides when he finally did admit to Heroin use in an interview he did the polar opposite of glamorize it.

You painted him as a romantic junkie from your own no doubt middle class, white desire to have depth, meaning and problems so you take up the path of emulation/a fanboy. Now all of a sudden because your ideals changed you hate a man who had no fucking relation to you at all except for self pity.

Kurt was a fucked up, intelligent and artistic man you're just a little kid talikng bullshit now shut the fuck up when you're about to make ficticious statements that are easily proved to be.

Not long ago you were rubbishing on about your own desire to try Heroin because of your own melodramas and now you think you have the right to take a moral highground on a stupid friend? Get off that horse before it bucks.

What the fuck? When the hell did I ever want to try heroin? I assure you any such statement is either made up by someone else or clearly sarcastic. Look, all I know is if Kurt hadn't made it seem so cool, intentionally or not, to take heroin then my friend wouldn't be such a dumbass as to want to try it. I'm pretty sure the reason he denied using heroin was purely to keep his label with him, furthermore he was always paranoid of the police and 'the system' and may have feared arrest. If he didn't want to glamorize heroin why the hell did he keep running from rehab? Why the hell didn't he show people how fucked up he was more?

My ideals have not changed, I have always been against heroin. If anything nowadays I want it legalised (along with all drugs, but that's a totally different topic).

Furthermore Kurt wasn't quite as artistic or intelligent as you may think, everyone sees him as a brilliant writer or whatever the fuck but once you look past the whole romanticism of his life in general he wasn't that good a song writer, he was a shit singer and a shite guitarist. I'm not saying that makes a bad musician, but it doesn't make him the best necessarily either. Furthermore I wouldn't say any heroin addict who messes his life up to the point of blowing his brains out is particularly intelligent. Come and criticize me when your friend tries to become a junkie, but fuck off until that happens ok?

Oh and before you defend Kurt's disease by saying something stupid like "he was an addict and its not his fault he couldn't stop" or any bullshit like that, he pretty damn well clearly knew the risks, especially considering his love of Sid Vicious and the likes. Plus Nicotene is technically more addictive than heroin and many many smokers quit and can avoid addiction (I have been smoking on and off for a year and a half and have never felt serious addiction). I know Heroin's harder to quit but the god damn fact of the matter is he shouldn't have started in the first place. He was a fucking dumbass and I hate the way he's advertising his addiction to the extent that 14 year olds want to try it.

So fuck off.
