View Full Version : Defend the Fertility Control Clinic

Hi there

You may have seen last month's protest on the news (and me in the background!). On the last Saturday of every month a group called the Helper's of God's Precious Infants ( ) hold a protest outside the Fertility Control Clinic in East Melbourne.

They stand outside the clinic, intimidate women as they enter, sing hymns and wave statues of Jesus and plastic foetuses around. In 2001 a security guard at the clinic was killed by an anti-abortion zealot and the group is so low that they FILM women entering the clinic. They claim it's for their own protection...

Rather than let them have their own way, various groups of pro-choicers get together before the Helper's arrive and block off the front of the building. This means that they go to the other side of the road and can't directly bother women and staff. I've had a chat with a few of the staff, and they're really grateful for our presence and show of support.

Defending women's right to control their own bodies is particularly important when you consider the political rhetoric of conservatives intent on "debating" abortion. So come along.

It's also fun to chant loudly at them. <_<
"God is a lesbian
she loves women"

etc etc

I won't be able to go to the next one, but here are the details:

When: 10am, last Saturday of every month
Where: 118 Wellington Parade, East Melbourne

Damn, I'd love to offer support.

Normally those Opus Dei types are on the counter, nice to see the Christan cause fractured.

Sounds very familiar.

Except the bit that they have to go to the other side of the street if you get there first. That'd be nice.

Have they tried physically blocking the doors or anything of that nature in Australia?

hey dude, I know that place well, a friend of my Dad's has his business just up the road. I am also quite well aquainted with those demonstrators. A few years ago, my Dad and I were visiting his friend, but anyway I got bored so went walking. I walked past them at first but around 10m on there was this women who was sort of looking nervously at them. I just happened to ask her if she was alright (looked pretty worried) and anyway, long story short I ended up escorting her into the clinic because all those fucking pro-lifers were really intimidating her. Then, when I came out they started getting into my face so I ended up having a street rour with them until my Dad came down at which point he called them all fucking facists and small people for intimidating women and we left. I have always hoped that ppor woman was fine.

Anyway dude, good luck with your counter-protests. If I could get over I would but I have my final exams coming. AFter that however, I'm gonna come over and give them another bit of mind.
