Do NOT use gmail for emails pertaining to ANYTHING about political activity, I read awhile back they signed a contract with the CIA or something, let me see if I can find it.

I believe those claims were found to be false. But the U.S. government can monitor your e-mail from whatever service you use. If you really seek privacy Keep messages short and vague and use an anonymous proxy server when accessing your mail. Of course this won't give you complete privacy but it's a good start.

You should be okay using any email. It can be accessed and watched, of course, but you shouldn't be talking about anything sensitive over email (or any monitorable form of communication, ie phones or mail) anyway.

Proxy doesn't really matter much. Eletronic communications in any shape isn't safe.
