This has been on my mind and i dont know where to post it so just move it where you see fit. firstly the Government failed to respond adequetly to hurricane katrina and thus it fucked everything up. Now Bush is calling it a state of emergency, sounds a lot like after 9/11, here we go with making people scared, the level was moved up to orange alert i believe. The major thing that pisses me off is that Bush is using the devastation to take peoples minds off of the war on "terror" and as things go, Iraq will be pushed into the background of many Americans and all peoples minds, Yes the amount of people died because of the Hurricane really pissed me off, and saddened me, but the worst of it is, Thousands, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, including women, the elderly and children, have been slaughtered either by the imperialist troops, or the bombs we dropped on them. Well i guess since they are inferior people according to Bush, and only american citizens are important they arent worth anything. Fucking diversion from other death that is happening, all because of his greed, and the wanting of making that extra buck, Hey Bush FUCK YOU, go to hell

hey hey, this is america not some thrid world country, where people diserve to die. Americans diserve better...
i hate the bullshit, makes me wanna say don't give money to the people down there. Honestly more people die each day from starvation, not some unpreventable disaster, the solution is simple but wheres the global movement. you don't need a cure for some disease, just food

oh and theres no such thing as "hell" ;) but if there was, starving to death could probably be a great comparison...

My take on this "disaster" is that the knowledge was there all along. Organizations pointed out three major "strikes on America" that would happen within the foreseeable future: a terrorist attack, a disaster in the area of New Orleans, and an earthquake in California (Los Angeles, more specifically). Two have come to pass.

Now, I'm not saying they foresaw terrorist attacks on the WTC and Pentagon, exactly as they were, nor everything that happened in the hurricane - but the simple fact that these two occurances had a high probability of happening is something to consider. It is well known that around 2030, the risk of an earthquake in Los Angeles will be around 67%.

Anyways - people had days to act before the disaster struck. But then comes the question if running is even an option. Many of you probably know that most people in New Orleans are poor, and just leaving their homes, although saving their lives, would make them beggars for the rest of their lives. Everything they have ever known must be left behind. It is a hard choice. It is a choice of if you want to live, or if just existing by any means is ok.

On the other hand, the authorities could have helped the situation - if they wanted to. It is clear now that the walls that were supposed to shield New Orleans from higher waves were too small, too fragile and too forgotten. It was too small because the water flooded over it. To fragile because the water crushed it - and too forgotten because they simply didn't want to spend money on something that "maybe never would go into use".

But I must say that I was quite surprized about the action of the USA against the disaster. I heard Canadian troops got to New Orleans five days before the US's own National Guard got there. And also, we cannot forget that even Cuba offered the people of New Orleans about 1000 med-personnel (was it?).

Maybe the USA isn't such a hyperstate as we before thought?

I'm not one for deep conspiracy theories, but in my worst nightmares, this one stood out. They let it happen. The Bush regime has tried to get across the idea that you can't rely on the government for help, that the social safety net is a myth, that only volunteerism, private enterprise and faith-based programs can save us. They let this situation get out of hand to support their point- that any gov't assistance is unreliable and socialism gone wild. I suspect this situation became to big for them and will eventually destroy them- we can only hope.
