Materialism is used in very many different ways. So if you could makes some distinctions, I'm sure we could help you out a bit more. In fact, start off simple. Learn some basics, and then we'll answer your questions.

It sounds like you're confusing two different meanings of "materialism".

The first is the sense you'd use to describe someone as "materialistic": obsessed with the pleasures of life, possessions, physical wealth and so on. The second is the meaning used by Marx and others to distinguish themselves from other thinkers of their day: a concern for the physical world as opposed to a focus on spiritual or metaphysical matters.

I can see some argument for how the first might suck out your emotions; but the second should be no problem for you.
