done a search on it and nothing poped up, so I truly apologize if there is already an existing thread.

so, anybody checked this one out? based on the true story of Samuel J. Bicke played by none other than Sean Penn.
in short - discovers how "The American Dream" is nothing but a lie, and only exists within the rich. goes through daily work analyzing his Capitalist colleagues, and their manipulative sales techniques. witness' the racism his friend and partner goes through. attempts to join the Black Panther Party. attempts to set up an honest business with his partner but is renounced.

and amongst all of that he struggles with his marriage. You first see him as a promising traditional business man looking to "go up" in the world, but slowly heads down as he refuses to lie and manipulate people inorder to just earn a living. in the end it all builds up and he pretty much loses it. I think the main message I got from this film is how The System can completely destroy a man unless he is willing to be a sheep in the herd, and how all what you thought was possible inorder to be a part of "The American Dream" slowly disappears.

great script, great directing, great cast, great acting - great movie.

Yeah I thought it was an excellent film, although it certainly wasn't a 'feel good' movie.

What I also got from it was that people who lack [or reject] the culture necessary to put on a successful social act are considered by society to be 'weak', or 'losers'. As a result, people refuse to give them the time of day, because they fail to fit in to their simplistic reality. People are interested only in getting ahead, and are not really interested in those who are left behind. It was really quite sad actually.

I couldn't help but cringe at nearly everything the main character would do and say as you could just tell that it would end up being a disaster.

Just seen it. It is a really good film, not to obvious, but, all the Socialist hints are there.
Definetely worth watching.

This appeared to me as very good left-wing propaganda. It is possibly a little too overt but nonetheless brilliant in many ways it provides a critique of capitalist society.

Its a very enjoyable and relatively well directed film too. When I watched it I couldn't helpy but analyse every line. Some of the rhetoric seems Maoist in nature, particularly when he says to some woman ''they' are the reason you dress like that'. Sean Penn is great in it and Leonardo di Caprio definately did a good job.

I saw it in the summer when I was at a summer college. My roomate thought highly of it, I didn't think it was great, but it was certainly good. Prior to my roomate showing me the film I had no recollection of it even thought it was released not too long ago.
