I'm think of adding Metal music to my collection, has anybody got any suggestions? I already have Slipknot (And doubtless there's better out there)

And how hard are Fear Factory's albums to get?

You want real metal? Iron Maiden, older Judas Priest, Master of Puppets by Metallica and Iced Earth.

I like so many genre's I suck at categorizing them, so I'm not sure if these are considered metal, but whatever here it goes....and if you don't like the groups, I don't care! lol

"?" on the ones I'm not sure about..(don't jump down my throat if they're wrong!)

Tool?, Snot, Soulfly, SOAD?, Hum?, Mudvayne, Orgy? (stfu..no comments), Sisters of Mercy?, Sonata Arctica?, Staind? (again..no comments), Kittie (again...no comments)...

I'm not sure if those are metal, I have a tendency to run industrial, metal, punk, and alternative all together in my head as "rock" lol. I grew up on rap/hip hop/r&b... i think thats why... <_<

I'll ask Praxis to come on here w/ some suggestions..he'll know..

Same here. Some of my favorite metal or similar bands, and albums that are good to start with:

Cannibal Corpse - Butchered at Birth, Gallery of Suicide
Cattle Decapitation - Homivore is the sole album I own, but Allmusic (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&searchlink=CATTLE|DECAPITATION&uid=CAW030509090124&sql=11:vt2m96oojepf~T2) seems to say that Humanure is a great CD as well
Pig Destroyer - Prowler in the Yard
AC/DC (Hmm)
Fear Factory
Gorgasm - Masticate to Dominate
Impaled - Mondo Medicale
Massacara - Final Holocaust
Ministry (more of Industrial Metal) - Psalm 69, The Land of Rape and Honey
KMFDM - WWIII
Hammerfall - Listening to "Live at Hultsfred" as we speak

I'm expanding my metal, grind, and noise influences at the moment, so I could have some more eventually.

I guess if you consider Metal alternative rock.

As for what music you should get if you want metal:

Opeth (death metal with acoustic interludes)
Mastodon (just a good slab of fucken metal)
Dillinger Escape Plan (hardcore math metal)
In Flames (melodic death metal)
Corrossion of Conformity (stoner metal)
Cephalic Carnage (a little death, a little grind, a little doom, a little math)

Good bands in that list... great bands...

are you serious, what a joke it seems like youve never even listened to SOAD, alternative rock is like incubus or american hi fi, definitely not system of a down, And real metal is not all that gibberish where all they do is screaming thats shitty, real metal is black sabbath, def leppard, and those other bands they said, oh ya iron maiden and such

As far as the simple, basic "metal" genre goes, I would skip over the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Mega Deth (as so many have suggested, as I find them over rated) and instead go straight for Ronnie James Dio's solo work (his work in Black Sabbath was good as well, but wasn't quite as distinctive as that band's earlier stuff). Slayer and early Metallica make for great speed/thrash metal (Wizard is a personal favorite of mine, but certainly less known and harder to find). Nine Inch Nails is a great choice if you want to go more industrial and Rammstein is fun if you can either speak German or are not bothered by the language barrier (Marilyn Manson's early stuff could be considered industrial, but I like his glam stuff better). I've never found nu-metal too interesting, but Disturbed's first album was good.

I can't say much about death/doom/black metal as I find it all boring and completely untalented, much like the current "hardcore" trend, but Cannibal Corpse has some humorous intros to their live shit.

Why don't you already have some metal in your music collection anyway? Geeze :P

Don't get any Cannibal Corpse, they are a bunch of talentless hack whose music is god auful. I am basing this conclusion on the album The Wretched Spawn, which was so bad i thought my ears would bleed.

Good metal for some just getting into it, is not stuff like tool, Children of Bodom, Kyuss (hard rock I suppose, rather than metal), etc. Its all an equired taste, because these bands are wierd, in my view. I like them, but only after considerable listening, and already quite a taste for bands like deftones, dream theatre, king diamond and others.

You want to start I suggest bands like Symphony X (who are a really good really tuneful band), Static X if you don't mind the conservative lyrics, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath (of course), King Diamond, Megadeth, Machine head, A Perfect Circle (tool lite), etc.

Thats the bands I started listening too when I got into metal, but maybe I'm an exception.

Hmph. <_<

Rammstein is okay, I wouldn't call them great but I have to give them credit. Marilyn Manson's a sellout and a NIN ripoff, but I have to admit, I want to bear his children anyway. I wouldn't call it hardcore or real industrial, because despite being good, he's become part of the poster image of what constitutes as a Mall Goth.

Has anyone mentioned Opeth?

Ugh, who let the black metal fans in here? DO NOT listen to bands like Immortal or Dimmu. They will only turn you off to the good stuff.

Anyhow, no, Fear Factory is not hard to get and for the most part pretty good. Atreyu (yeah, I know, bad movie reference in the title) rocks the hacienda. Sepultura from the Roots album back as some have said earlier (though, personally, I like Roots the best as I really dig on the whole tribal aspect). Snot is really good, although they only released one album before their lead singer died of a drug overdose. Although I don't know if you could technically call them metal since a couple of their songs sound really punky.

This is getting too long, so I'll just list the rest.

Tool (despite the debate, they're still sick)
Soulfly
Probot (basically just Dave Grohl [yeah, the guy from Nirvana and Foo Fighters] entertaining some childhood metal fantasy, but still pretty good)
Drowning Pool
Satyricon
Cradle of Filth
Snapcase (technically West Coast hardcore punk, but still really good)
Steppenwolfe (not metal by today's standards, but they are credited with inventing the genre)
Oh, and of course Black Sabbath

Floyd.
13th September 2005, 22:12
God damn you call Dimmu shit when he's some of the only black metal stuff that rises above it along with shit like Burzum and then you recommend the totally shit Cradle of Filth, Probot, Drowning Pool and Fear-fucking-Factory. Dino was the only one not to sell out and that's why I'd rather Brujeria or Aesino any old day.

Besides most metal is shit and just macho posturing. If you want the good stuff start with my above tips.

Some people listed some good bands. I got a few more for you.

REAL black metal (none of that Dimmu and CoF bullshit):
Abazagorath
Absu (more thrash/black, but badass nonetheless)
Anaal Nathrakh
Avenger
Black Pentecost
Black Witchery
Cult of Daath
Demoncy
Dissection (!!!)
Emperor (old)
Enslaved
Goat Semen
Goatwhore

Legions of Astaroth
Mayhem (old)
Melechesh
Nachtmystium
Nargaroth
Pagan Winter
Possessed
Sodom
Thornspawn
To Scale the Throne
Ulver (old)
Venom
Xasthur

I'm not too big on death, but here are a few death, thrash, and other non-black metal bands (that includes symphonic 'black' metal) I enjoy:
Agoraphobic Nosebleed
Anal ****
Arch Enemy (old)
Borknagar
Cryptopsy
Death
Disgorge
Entombed
Gorelord
Immolation
Incantation
Kreator ('Pleasure to Kill' era)
Macabre

Quo Vadis
Sex Trash

I know I said a few more, and I apologise, hehe. Enjoy.

You may be right. I've never actually read the official story on that one. I just knew that he died somehow, and after hearing the Strait Up album I assumed it was an overdose. I mean, there are samples of him talking about constantly fighting addiction and shit, so drugs were what I was led to believe.

Anyway, the Strait Up album is pretty good. If you liked Snot you should check it out. It's the remaining members of the band doing Lynn's songs (which he wrote before he died but never recorded) with lead singers from other bands. It even has Ozzy Osbourne delivering a spoken eulogy to him.

Oh, shit, I almost forgot to mention Ultraspank. They're pretty good, too.

Restin,

It depends what era you're talking about. Early ND was definitely grind/punk, which I usually just classify as crust. Later ND moved towards a grind/death style, and I'd say that's where they're at right now.

Manson's hardly a NIN rip-off, he was Rezner's protégé so it's only natural that there will be lingering resemblances. I think his early work (like Antichrist Superstar) was quite industrial, but I agree that I would not call him hardcore in the least bit, thankfully too since this whole new "hardcore" genre is just awful... It's like nu-metal and death metal's ass-ugly love child. :P

I personally prefer older metal (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, older Metallica, AC/DC, Quiet Riot, older Slayer, etc.). I don't really like too much of the new metal; it sounds like mere screaming for the most part.

From Beatle Kat:

No!!Slayer are definitely right-wing and in a song they say something (positive) about swastikas.A leftist friend of mine who love(d?) them told me this....

In which song was this? I know that they seemed to talk about the horrible things done by a famous Nazi (I can't remember his name, but he was known as the "Angel of Death". That is the name of the song, but I can't see it being interpreted as pro-Nazi.). Is it a later song, or something like that (I only have their earlier stuff, the lastest being the Divine Intervention album (that one is crap.).

Wasn't their fanclub once referred to as the Slaytanic Wehrmacht? Now when you do stuff like that and you have a song about Josef Mengele, you might, just might attract some of the wrong element and in general give people the wrong idea about you.

DON'T listen to shit like Drowning Pool or Disturbed, Korn or Nightwish.
My short list has to be:

Iron Maiden
Metallica - classic thrash
Slayer - "
Emperor - classic black
Still Remains - just heavy
3 Inches of Blood - power metal group who right songs about pirates!
Opeth - death
Children of Bodom - death
Capharnaum - death
Ozzy (well only the clasics - Mr Crowley, Crazy Train, and No more Tears)
Sabbath
Cradle of Filth - Ignore the snobs who slag them off for not being 'real' black metal - who cares when they make such good music? (well some of the time anyway) Get the track Gilded ****

And of course, my favorite band Trivium. They mix thrash and death metal in such an awesome way (though not so much in this track) http://trivium.org/media_download.php?pid=1075&secdir=videos

Last time they played Master of Puppets, and afterwards I was walking through town at midnight singing it at the top of my lungs with my mates!

Carcass are alright aswell, and have some pretty weird track names.
Oh yeah, if anyone wants some shit, but hilarious metal, download some Immortal Ayatollah - they play Fundamentalist islamic Balck-Metal, and have track names like 'George Bush Is a transsexual robot,' 'white god - nameless shit,' and 'from anal dissection to orgasmic anti-christian mass-murder.' !!

I don't listen to much metal metal (more of an industrial person myself), however 2 notes:

1) Cannibal Corpse is not banned in New Zealand. I don't really have an opinion on their music, however their lyrics can be bloody funny (in a kinda distruibed way) and their existance is worth it for their album covers, which always make me grin.

2) Don't you dare buy KMFDM- WWIII. It sucked. Badly. It was a rushed album designed to cash in on the pseudo-leftism that became fashionable with the war in Iraq. If you really want to listen to KMFDM get their earlier stuff, or more peferably listen to better industrial....but then again, some people call me bias.

Forget about all that shit, just go for Slayer!!!

No!!Slayer are definitely right-wing and in a song they say something (positive) about swastikas.A leftist friend of mine who love(d?) them told me this....
Slayer is not right-wing. 2 out of 4 of the band members are not even white. Tom Araya is from Chile and Dave Lombardo is from Cuba.

Just because they may sing about certain things doesn't mean they're advocating such a thing. It's merely for shock value..

Here's what Tom had to say about that in an interview...

Are Slayer nazis or racists?

Tom: "I don't like people accusing us of being right-wing. 2 of us [this was 1988 when Lombardo was still in the band] aren't even American - how could we be fascists?"

Tom: "...America and England, where some sections accused us of being fascists. All I can say to that is, that we never wanted to influence anyone politically. We make it obvious on "Behind the Crooked Cross" that we're not nazis. We're not very involved in politics, even though we occasionally include statements in our songs."

Personally I find that with the exception of NSBM, most metal musicians and fans are left of the centre.

Yeah, NSBM is bullshit.

I love black metal, but it pisses me off that a lot of Norwegian bands (and some US bands, at that) do the whole NS thing. It's ridiculous. The guy from Burzum (which is a good band, but the guy sucks) stated something about the Norwegians descending from Aryans and being more 'pure' than other people, with the exceptions of Germans, who are the 'sister race' of Norwegians. But what he doesn't mention is that the 'Aryan' race came from the east; Iranians sometimes trace their ancestry to the Aryans.

But beyond that, black metal is awesome.

Chile and Cuba huh?? Yeah no fascists from those places.

I'm not saying they are fascist, I don't know enough about them to have much of an opinion on them. I do however think it is a bad idea to use nazi iconography and to refer to you fanclub as the Slaytanic "Wehrmact". Why use Wehrmcht? Especially when one half of the band is latino? Wouldn't Slaytanic Fuerzas Armadas make more sense?

No, they're fucking shit. :D
If you want some decent metal with a female vocalist, get some Arch Enemy.

On the Nazi thing, did't the drummer from Emperor murder a man in a park, just because he was gay?
The funny thing about that was that he told Dani Filth, who ignored it and decided to draw on his face when he was asleep instead of phoning the police!

I haven't read this thread.

anyway, all you need is:

sepultura, fear factory, brujeria, six feed under, machinehead and maybe for those german native speakers here totenmond, sodom, eisregen and adorned brood

stick to political stuff (grindcore etc.) it has enogh aggression and is most of the time combined with great lyrics.

I have spoken

get some Trivium, Soil, Iron Maiden and Arch Enemy to start with, perhaps even some Anthrax or the Haunted, dont you dare even think of Slayer they are utter shit(well at least it took me some time to get used to them, they are the kinda band that when you buy one of thier cds you listen to like a song then leave it on the cd for a few months then listen to it and perhaps like it)

(ive seen all those bands but Soil, ive even seen slayer)
