On the pamphlet it says to boil for a single minute but unless you are in a huge hurry i would say about 5. use a shirt or some cloth to filter teh water initailly.

You can get waterfilters at outdoor stores, but they are fairly expensive. They usually could be ganked pretty easily if you are good.

If you have the option use water from a running source (creek spring etc) before any non moving bed. Boiling and filtering will get rid of some particulate, bacteria, and viruses but will not protect you from pollution, so if you live in the city/suburbs dont go around filtering and drinking puddle water. :P

I have a book on survival techniques, I'll scan it and photograph it and post whichever looks better.

**EDIT** Here we go, I scanned it and put the parts together.

The editor of the book obviously decided that putting all of the information about getting water in one place was too easy, so I'll scan the methods of aquiring water and making it safe later.

Of course, there are also capsules that can sterilize your water automatically. These are much faster and make the process much easier.

There are also bottles that purify water almost instantly: http://www.magellans.com/store/Health___Wa...tionFH321?Args= (http://www.magellans.com/store/Health___Water_PurificationFH321?Args=)

A touch expensive though ($44).

The best portable water filters on the market today are made by MSR. They are about $80, but they have a nice ceramic core that you can just scrape off to clean. If i can come up with that kind of money i'm going to get one. But $80 is a lot of calories.
