fairly obvious points but theyre all i could think of at the moment :P

DESIGN

* make your leaflet attractive and eye-catching - use bold lines. draw the readers attention towards the MAIN POINTS in the leaflet

* a picture may or may not be worth a thousand words - but it sure as hell looks better. scrap everything but VITAl text - people don't wanna have to read a bloody essay to get the point of the flyer.

* make sure it is easy to see/read. use a print size and font which is reader friendly, and use coloured paper which is bright and black text is easily visible on.

* with a5 leaflets, point form/short summaries work best.

* tell the reader WHO you are, WHAT you stand for, WHEN and WHERE you meet [for actions and meetings] include a telephone number as a point of contact [email address as a secondary one if you want]. i find landline numbers are more attractive - obviously cos theyre cheaper. but then again mobile numbers you're more likely to get the contact, plus theres always sms i suppose.

* i find that having the images, captions, and contact numbers on one side and some more indepth info on the other helps... then again it could be seen as a waste of ink.

DISTRIBUTION

* stand in an area where there is a regular flow of people. team up with someone to get people going in different directions.

* as people go past, approach them, cheerfully hand them a flier and say something like "have you heard about vsu?" most people will just take it and keep walking, but if they do stop to talk to you be prepared to speak, with a clear summary of what you're campaigning for and what your plan is.

* make eye contact

* if they refuse your flier dont bother trying to chase them if there are other people nearby. if they start to argue, engage in debate with them if they seem reasonable and intelligent.. if they're just throwing stupid arguments at you its unlikely youll get anywhere so dont waste time.

* try and organise rosters of people to leaflet, its very easy to get burnt out especially when you keep being rejected.

* those two points being said, try your hardest to get everyone you can! ive found that if one person refuses the leaflet, the people behind them will feel that its 'okay' to do so too. on the other hand, if people are taking a flier, others will think well maybe its interesting and take it too. people are, in essence, sheeps.
