I'd say google it, and I think crimethinc has a pretty good article about the techniques.
The basics are quite simple: At a protest, a group of people dress in all-black and cover their faces. That way you can actively fight the cops back and try to do whatever you're trying to do without being recognized. Also snatch squads will have a lot more difficulties arresting people, since everyone looks the same.

DISCLAIMER: this is solely for informative purposes, I highly disagree with the following and must ask that no one put these lessons into practice.

There are a lot of things the black bloc can do:

Barricades: These can be usefull to keep the police back, but if they're prepared they can usually drive through most barricades. You can also erect them to prevent certain groups of people passing (e.g. nazis).

Locking arms: Used for pretty much the same things as barricades, the positive side about this tactic is that the police probably won't run you over, but they might use watercanons or batons to drive you apart. You can prevent this by lying or sitting down.

Un-arresting: When you see a snatch squad grabbing someone, try to free them. The snatch squad will be prepared for this, so make sure you've got enough people backing you up or you might get arrested yourself.

Throwing stuff: If you want the police to back off, the best tactic is just to throw everything you can find at them. Off course, this might also cause the police to react with more violence and use water canons, tear gas, ...

Property destruction: This is a practice also usually carried out by black blocs, sometimes it's directed at specific targets (Mcdonalds, banks, ...) but at other times its just random destruction and hooliganism. If you don't know why you should smash that particalur window: just don't!
