CUBAN President Fidel Castro has offered to help the United States, by sending 1,100 doctors and medicine to treat the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Some 100 doctors could board a flight to Houston, Texas, as soon as today and 1,000 could arrive tomorrow and the day after, Castro said in a radio and television address. Cuba would also send 26.4 tonnes of medicines.

"Cuba is ready to help immediately," he said. "We offer concrete things, doctors to the site of the tragedy, which is exactly what is missing now."

Very interesting Indeed, Comrade.

They will probably not mention it at all, like how they didn't mention Chavez giving a million bucks in Aid. Assholes.

lol , u know the best situation for us right now if kinda sad but if bush openly rejects this, and the ppl find out it will help us more, but what is more important our cause or should we hope bush accepts?

The same way they reacted to Venezuela's offer to help:

"Unsolicited offers can be counter productive" <_<

"At the time, American officials had asked Cuban authorities not to publicise their offer of aid, said Castro, who indicated Havana was still awaiting a response from Washington."

I wonder why? lol

I would say it would help our cause more if they send the stuff. I mean, anyone who comes in contact with a kind, helpful, and skillfull Cuban doctor will be more likely to trust in socialism in general.

exactly, because if the U.S government accepts the aid, U.S people would be able to know and understand what is really Cuba and its socialist government.
Most U.S citizens don´t even imagine the way Cuba really helps when there is people in need. That´s why I believe this is a very good oportunity to let everybody know what the Cuban Revolution is about. I really hope Bush accepts the aid!!!

There is no way the US will acknowledge this request. This country is far to arrogant to take any help from the Cuban people. It suprises me to think that they're actually accepting aid from the European Union; considering how many Americans frown upon "old europe."

It it would be good for the U.S. to accept this offer of help. On the other hand, I believe the Shrub administration will reject the offer citing that the medicines be tainted and the doctors untrained in disaster relief or a few other lying reasons. I will be very surprised if they do take Cuba's offer.

i doubt they will, because people are being rebellious and the cuban doctors could lead a organized rebellion.

On the scroll at the bottom of the screen on CNN, it said that Castro won't comment now on the Bu$H (non)response because "you don't kick an adversary when he is down".

No it isn't, socialism is an economic and political phase of the state.

Socialism to me, is caring about social issues. A Socialist cares about the social consequences of something. Thats my definition anyway.

It says a hundred doctors could arrive today. Doesn't that mean they pretty much accepted the offer? Why else would the doctors get here today, with the rest coming tomorrow and the day after?

No.. he was just pointing out that 100 doctors could be there in a day, etc.

US sends mixed signals on accepting aid from abroad (http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2005/09/02/us_sends_mixed_signals_on_accepting_aid_from_abroa d/)

They say they're willing to accept Venezuelan material aid, though possibly not personnel....and Rice says they aren't turning down any aid. I suspect that in practice Cuban personnel will be quietly blocked.

Fidel Castro, the Cuban president, put on display some 1 500 doctors equipped with medical supplies yesterday in hopes of persuading arch-enemy, the US, to allow them to treat victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Castro, in a televised meeting with the doctors, said the US had not responded to his offer to send medical workers and 26 tonnes of supplies to the devastated US Gulf Coast. Castro first made the offer public during a television presentation on Friday, saying political enmity should be put aside during such a crisis.

The doctors, each with a green rucksack filled with emergency medicines, were brought to Havana over the weekend, Castro said, and were ready to leave at a moment's notice. Castro read out news stories describing a lack of medical attention for Katrina refugees and those still trapped in Louisiana and Mississippi a week after the storm hit. "Forty-eight hours have passed and we still haven't received any response to our offer ... We will wait patiently as many days as are necessary," said Castro.
