"These troops are fresh back from Iraq, well trained, experienced, battle tested and under my orders to restore order in the streets. They have M-16s and they are locked and loaded. These troops know how to shoot and kill and they are more than willing to do so if necessary and I expect they will"

Completely off subject, but I can't stand michael moore.
On the subject, it shouldn't really surprise us much. Governments have a long history of strongarming people into social control.

Looters should be arrested and prosecuted but death is a bit too far. I mean, all they are stealing is TV's, it isnt murder! Dont see how they can use tv's anyway if there's no electricity but anyway.
If it was me, i'd give looters who are taking food and clothes etc warnings or small sentences like community service. For looters stealing "material" goods then they should be arrested. Same goes for gangs shooting at the rescue corps....a longer sentence for those idiots.

Why? Their trying to survive. So anxious to protect private property?
For looters stealing "material" goods then they should be arrested.
Why, they've just lost everything, prob most without insurance whereas the shops will have insurance

But its all about law. People committing crimes cant be seen to get away with it, the issue has to be attended to. If nothing happens, it'll only spread like wildfire the feeling that you can do anything and blame it on the hurricane.
I do agree with your points though....but i feel it is an issue with more than one correct response.

Did anyone catch the Laura Bush photo op on CNN. Seems when ever dubya backs himself into a corner they never fail to pull out the trump card - sweet thang, Laura. She was at a shelter in La somewhere trying to relay the good message from this disaster. What a great job the relief workers are doing, how smooth the operations are going, and how wonderful the compassion of the American people is. At least 70% of the people in the background at the shelter were white.

Most of the looters are not stealing because of want but out of necessity.
"Yes, there are gangbangers taking TVs. Many of them are armed. But from
every reliable report I can find from local media and people on the ground,
for every dumbass carrying around a plasma TV he can never use there are
hundreds of people wading through sewage looking for food and water."
-CNN
The bourgeois media is being rather blunt and striaght forward about this. There is also free footage from most bourgeois websites interviewing those who are stuck at the Superdome. There was one guy who said lots of us would be dead if we did not steal to survive.
You would give these people a warning? Tell them no? You cannot survive.

I just read that same paragraph. Also, check this one out:
Donald Dudley, a 55-year-old New Orleans seafood merchant, complained that when he and other hungry refugees broke into the kitchen of the convention center and tried to prepare food, the National Guard chased them away.
"They pulled guns and told us we had to leave that kitchen or they would blow our damn brains out," he said. "We don't want their help. Give us some vehicles and we'll get ourselves out of here!"
^^ I can see why they're shooting at them now. Typical US Troop behavior.
These people NEED food and if the Guard is going to threaten to kill them when they try to get it, then I say they have every right to resist the guard when they are trying to survive.
Fuck the Guard.

Stray gunshots and threats from evacuees led some rescuers to suspend boat searches along New Orleans' swollen waterways. "In areas where our employees have been determined to potentially be in danger, we have pulled back," confirmed Russ Knocke, Department of Homeland Security spokesman.

They will risk their lives to pull marines out of Iraq, but the civilians that those marines are sworn to defend are left behind to die?

With the exception of the assholes shooting at hospitals, we need to support the "looters" and "bandits" in New Orleans. These rebels are taking up arms against a system of that neglects it's own people while spending billions on imperialism. Viva New Orleans!

More than half the NO police have turned in their badges after being asked to stop the looting. This is a promising sign, and I hope it is predictive of conditions worldwide when the brewing disasters of global warming and the energy crisis come to the fore. It shows that (some/most) working class Enforcers side with the working class.
I would not call any NO cop a coward, and the couple I've dealt with were reasonable beyond all expectations.

Those "bandits" that are roaming the streets aren’t revolutionaries who have taken up arms against the system; they are just criminals profiteering from other people’s misery. They are not hurting the system, they are only hurting the citizens of NO. Law and order should be restored as soon as possible, since those criminals are also hampering aid efforts.

Met by Despair, Not Violence (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-troops3sep03,0,7512924.story?page=1&coll=la-home-headlines)
As they begin to patrol the chaotic city, troops are surprised by what they don't find.
The truck lurched through the streets, past buildings burning unabated and MPs in gun turrets. When they stopped to gear up for their arrival at the New Orleans Convention Center, where more than 15,000 people had been living in squalor since Katrina, these words echoed — for the first time, one would imagine — through the intersection of Poydras Avenue and Carondelet Street: "Lock and load!"
"Sixteen in the clip!" one Guardsman shouted, a common refrain used to indicate that rifles are fully loaded.
But when they arrived, they did not find marauding mobs. They did not come under fire. They found people who had lost everything in the storm and, since then, their dignity.
Not surprisingly, looks like the violence has been blown out of proportion, perhaps by officials looking for any excuse for their failure to deliver aid, and media who always overhype street crime.
I talso hought this was also an illuminating example of Washington's ever-increasing willingness to use the same military force against people within U.S. borders as outside.
I also saw on CNN that MREs were dropped on people at the Superdome or the convention center, I didn't catch which. Just like Afghanistan!
Also of interest:
He made it several miles west, toward downtown and higher ground, then watched police stop at gunpoint a Ryder van that had been hot-wired by thieves. The officers told the men inside that they had to stop looting and must try to get people out of the neighborhoods, that people were dying.
"Believe it or not, those dudes got the message," Williams said.
The thieves began ferrying people out of the devastated neighborhoods to the east. The police had deputized looters.
"They had to," Williams said. "There was no other way to get people out."
The thieves dropped him off at the convention center, where he stayed until the troops arrived.

Not only is there no electicity, but many of these items would be completely useless if left in the flood.

Now what they need is the troops to go AWOL and help those people instead of imposing a police state.

Psy, i dont think that could be too far away. If the situation doesnt improve within the next week, i think there'll be war on the streets of New Orleans. I think the survivors anger is just going to build up until its let out in a furious attack. Hopefully the National Guard will join the survivors in a fight against the US.
This is the country thats the blueprint for our country...economically and socially. And this is how they treat their people.......

I haven't considered it worth responding to fantasyland nonsense like this up to now...but what the heck.
First, see the article I posted on the last page.
Second, these are not the kind of conditions which lead to organized revolt. No, misery alone does not produce rebellion....or rebellion would be constant.

What's had me furious over the last few days is all the reports of rape and sniper fire. And the way that the masses seem to be lapping it up. I feel like it's 9/11 all over again, the media's back for round two.
I have this book by Tom Hayden, I forget the exact title but its all about the riots in Newark. In the book he explains how consant (false) reports of sniper fire, were used as a justification for the murder of hundereds of black folks.
When I first heard the reports of sniper fire on CNN, I thought, holy shit how many people are being murdered right now. :(

Five dead 'were army workers'
The Australian | September 5 2005
At least five people shot dead by police as they walked across a New Orleans bridge yesterday were contractors working for the US Defence department, according to a rep ort by The Associated Press.
A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal, the new agency said, quoting a defence Department spokesman.

I wonder what exactly the credentials are for deeming someone a "looter" to be shot on site. Maybe the DoD engineers were black men in nice clothing (must have been looted!)?
The very sad part is that if they are shooting their own, you know they are also shooting plenty of innocents

To quote Bill Hicks - Hitler had the right idea, he was just an Underachiever.
That's really funny when its in the right context, and if anybody knows Bill hicks...well enough said.
The shoot to kill policy is just that: Since the flood and poverty haven't killed the poor, the state decided to take it upon themselves.
