In two of the Central Asian states—Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan—the communist party was simply renamed and its last leader from the Soviet period retained office as president. The renamed Democratic Party of Turkmenistan remains that country’s only legal political party

--From Wikipedia

Does this mean that we should support Turkmenistan, as it is still fundamentally a "communist" state, or is there more to it?

that really isnt a sufficient way to analyse a country.

Look at who holds power in the country.
Who runs the workplaces?
How is democracy in the country?

Turkmenistan is not socialist or communist in any way at all, but a huge prison where the citizens work tirelessly to please a dictator.

Same with Uzbekistan, The gov. lies and kills its people and then lies about the numbers its killed(stricingly similar to the ussr)

Most of Russia's rulling party are old CPSU members, Putin was a member and a member of the KGB.

Turkmenbashi is a cartoon dictator. Just because he was in the revisionist Soviet bureacracy it doesn't mean he is in any way socialist or communist.
He is a cancerous bastard child who outlaws things at his whim.
His dodgy Turkmen Nationalism also gives me the creeps!
He invalidated people with foreign degrees which means many qualified professionals unable to work for the peoples' welfare.

Hmm... I have to disagree with some of the Soviet bashing... Solidarity is needed among communists, and if you read works by Fidel you'll gain more insight on the revolutionary democracies such as the Soviet Union. Particularly "On War, Racism, and Imperialism":"The Ravages of Global Capitalism."

Niyazov recently closed all hospitals and libraries outside Ashgabat, and fired doctors to replace them with military staff. He's not socialist at all.

Yeah, I know that Slovenia's president was in the communist party when it was still a part of Yugoslavia as well.

Well in Russia everyone of note used to be in the CPSU. So let's not go there.

Niyazov is a fool though. A complete and utter nutter. And, much like many Soviet leaders, he's certainly not a socialist.
