View Full Version : Leftist Music Redundant

OK, there may be a big flaw in my thinking but here's my theory/idea...

...if punk/leftist/revolutionary music achieved what you would assume is there goal and managed to overthrow the system...wouldn't their music then be redundant?...most of the board loves bands like Rage Against The Machine because not only are they a great band but they campaign for the release of Mumia & Peltier, they're anti-Bush, anti-war, etc...what if Bush was cast down and the people took control...released (political) prisoners, helped the enviroment, stopped the wars...what would be the point of punk/protest songs?where would bands get there material considering most leftist bands material is about 70% from protesting things?

also, many of you say you are anti-capatalism...yet almost everyone first heard music they loved through capatalism, either through a CD or MTV, whatever

The way I see it, maybe some revolutionary music, is simply protest music. But the majority of it is just like most music. It's stories, and situations being articulated, (sort of like a newscast) over beats and melodies. Music has almost always been this way. In medival times music was the news.

That's like saying, "What would Karl Marx write after the revolution?"
There will always be social problems, progression, and barriers.

I agree. Leftist bands will not be through writing political protest songs until leftist policy is implemented, and even then they could disagree, as there are always disagreements amongst the left.

Following that logic, communist artists will not be done making a fuss until the class system is killed off; life, after all, follows art.

I'm sure certain right wing political music would emerge.

And as for the leftist music now, as people have said, it's not entirely protest music, and bands can adapt to situations. Plus there will always be disagreements, it's the very nature of politics, to have conflicting views, and this carries into the music.

If a revolution happens, eventually every song dealing with making it happen will sound dated and many punks will start worshipping Yes. Seriously.

To remind us of how bad things were during bush's days or whoever. To remind us of all the comrades who died fighting for equality and true justice.

At least there will be an end to manufactured pop, that shit really f*ckes me off.

First off I'll kill myself before voluntarily listening to Styx.

As for the main question the good songs would still survive. I can think of many good punk songs that came about as a result of the Reagan era. Regan's gone but the songs are still good so I still listen to them. Granted many of the problems that arose then still exist but some songs are specifically about Reagan. Like someone mentioned many songs have a historical side to them and just because things may change doesn't mean you should forget what happened before.

Anyone from South Africa here?? I'm just curious, there must have been a lot of protest music from back in the Aparthied days if so what has happened to it??
