I felt pretty weird today when i saw somebody's avatar of SubComandante Marcos with an hammer and sickle!!!
A communist? no way !!!!Anyways that's what i think !!!
So let me know what you think and i'll be glad to fight it out with you !!!!!!Marcos is plain and simply a Zapatista !!!!!!!

there is no such thing as "simply a zapatista" just as there is no such thing as "simply a communist". He definitely doesn't go hand in hand with the sickle and hammer. I don't think any true communist does. Oh well.

I think I've read that Subcommandante Marcos is a "Marxist intellectual", and if I ain't totally wrong Zapata himself worked for collectivisation of farms and stuff, an anarchosyndicalist or communist of sort I think.

I might be very wrong, I don't know my Zapata very well :/

Marcos has made sure to seperate himself from any group or ideology!!!He wants to be known as nothing more than a Zapatista !!!!!Many leftists criticize him for not choosing a program!!!Marcos considers Maoist-Marxists-Leninist-Trotskyites as old dinosaurs!!!He knows very well that communism is not suited for mexico!And he does not want to supplant the existing social order !!!Marcos his first and foremost a Humanitarian!!!!He is the voice of the campesinos!!Marcos did not adopt marxism because in pure marxism there is discrimination against indigenous people.So La comandancia came up with the EZLN and their idiology is zapatismo!!!!

In Marcos' words:We are not Marxists, nor are we guerillas. We are Zapatistas and we are an army!!!

The hammer and sickle has evolved in its meaning over the years and cannot be penned down to a single meaning now but I guess that it does represent the oppressed people and their control of society. While Marcos might not claim to be a communist etc in reality his beliefs are very similar to those. Anyway the sickle represented the peasantry or farmers and thats why the indigenous people of Mexico are, farmers.

In my opinion, Marcos is a communist, aside from the hammer and sickle stuff...

The difference lies, although, in the fact that Marcos understands that TIME GOES BY, things just change, and such. So he knows very well that we must learn from previous History lessons, and at the same time IMPROVE.

If reality today shows us that things are just different from yesterday, then WE must change. Then WE are the ones to put on the board the QUESTIONS, not only the possible answers. Indeed, the favourite answer from Marcos (and Zapatistas in general) is "Don´t know..., let´s build it together".

i think the sickle goes perfect for marcos, the hammer i dont know what it raeally means so i dont know.

but either way, he is no communist. he is "simply a zapatista." that name seems to not fit, but just think of it. doesnt he ONLY fight for the indiginous ppl? doesnt he ONLY fight the coming of new big coorporations on their land?
