You have ZERO privacy. In old East Germany, the Stasi would exactly what you had in your drawers and how much provisions you were hoarding from the masses. They intimidated their citizens/slaves into submission and everyone lived in constant fear.

You would work more than 10 hours a day for the state, producing goods that you have to stand in line for several hours, or be placed on a wait list for years. In the old Soviet Union, the average "comrade" would wait up to 5 years before they could afford a telephone. Just think how long it took to buy a TV?

If you even stuck out your tongue at a high party official or pointed that pitch fork in the wrong direction, you would be whisked away to their jails, cuffed to a metal chair and worked over like a punching bag. No rights, no attorney, NO COURTS! Then they sent you to a prison camp to literally die.

No freedom of the press, no religion or any other belief other than what the state provides, and most of the budget went to military strength.
