This topic has been thoroughly discussed on this website countless times. There have been ful threads dedicated to debating over the issue in the opposing ideology forum. Many people here would agree with your sentiments in thinking that it is a huge invasion of privacy. I doubt a single person in this forum will disagree with you on that point

As for getting people to e-mail politicains, I'm pretty sure you won't get a positive response with that request. Most of the people on this website feel that it is a waste of time to complain to a high ranking politician. You must realize that they don't care about our voice, and complaining to them will do nothing. They listen to their campaign donaters not those they "represent."

Well put timbaly.

Yes the Patriot Act destroys much of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. If you want more info on this I suggest you watch, Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil Liberties. It is a documentary and is fantastic.

And yes, this has been discussed many times. And it sucks. And writing to politicians isn't gonna do shit, mainly because the Patriot Act was modified the morning before the vote on it, and all of Congress didn't get a change to review the changes. And while some are complaining, their complaints arn't being addressed because no one really cares that much.

Sorry, the truth hurts.

Your sentiments are correct, Red Power but unfortunately nothing the public can do will change it. It is the biggest invasion of privacy i know and it is a disgrace....but unfortunately, the american government doesnt listen to its people so you're stuck with it i'm afraid. in my eyes, its a dictatorship hiding behind a cloak of democracy.

A request like this would get a much better following on ReformistLeft. Here at RevolutionaryLeft there are only a handful of reform minded communists and socialists.

Maybe only a handful of reform minded communists but there are many of revolutionary mind with no stomach to follow their ideology.

Good News...

About the USA PATRIOT Act.
-----------------------------------------

Fewer than half of Americans know the purpose of the Patriot Act, and the more they know about it the less they like it, according to a poll released Monday.
Fewer than half of those polled, 42 percent, are able to correctly identify the law's main purpose of enhancing surveillance procedures for federal law enforcement agencies, according to the poll conducted by the Center for Survey Research and Analysis at the University of Connecticut.

Almost two-thirds of all Americans, 64 percent, said they support the Patriot Act. But support dropped to 57 percent among those who could accurately identify the intent of the legislation. The survey was intended to take a closer look at the high levels of public support the Patriot Act has gotten in various polls, said Samuel Best, the center's director.

"The Patriot Act has been a very visible piece of legislation," Best said. "We wanted to see if people had an understanding of the act that differentiated it from the war on terrorism generally." "Most people don't distinguish the Patriot Act from the war on terror in general," Best said. The House and Senate have voted to extend provisions of the Patriot Act that were set to expire at the end of this year, making many of those provisions permanent. A conference committee is scheduled to try this fall to work out differences in the House and Senate versions of the legislation.

Some provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act are supported by a solid majority, while others got far less support. The provision that permitted federal agents:

"Once people see these things hit increasingly close to home, they become more and more troubled," Best said. Three-fourths said they think that law enforcement will frequently or occasionally use the law to investigate crimes other than terrorism. Almost as many, 72 percent, said they expect it will be used to investigate legitimate political and social groups. People are evenly divided on whether the law has prevented terrorist attacks. While numerous polls have indicated widespread support for the USA PPATRIOT Act, Best said his research suggests "people are pretty torn on where they stand."

Because it is this year's debate topic I am coming to know more and more about the subject. FYI they have been monitoring the internet activities of suspected terrorists and terrorist sympathizers, and I think a website title such as "RevolutionaryLeft" would raise more than a few eyebrows. Beware the program "Karnivore", for it is used to monitor activites on the internet. Get anti-spyware free off of the internet and try to combat it, if it is feasable.
