the committee of the israeli communist party - the democratic front for peace and equality - convened yesterday to elect the party's list to the knesset (the israeli parliament).

member of knesset muhammad barakeh was elected to lead the party again in the elections, with mk isam mahul as number two. as number three lawyer dov hanin was elected.

unfortunately, current mk tamar gujanski retired from the political life. tamar is the knesset member who passed to largest number of social laws in the current knesset, and served israel in the knesset for 12 years. the constitution of the party does not allow a mk to serve for more than 12 years.

Blasphemy, do you know anything about a group called the "Israeli Communist Forum"?? -- supposedly some kind of left-split from the CPI.

I tried to email them--a little polemic against Leninism--but my isp said the address was no good.

currently, the communist party has 3 out of 120 seats in the knesset. according to polls, the elections in january will probably weaken them to 2 seats, but there is a chance they will maintain their power at 3. right now, the chance they are going to strenghten doesn't seem reasonable.

muhammad barakeh and isam mahul are both arab citizens of israel. barakeh is a muslim, mahul is a christian, and hanin, number 3 in the list, is a jew.
