gas mask
Most military gas-mask filters contain a substance known as "activated charcoal." It's the key active ingredient. Now... you could buy this over the counter at a drug store, but it's expensive, and it's probably animal charcoal. Now... charcoal falls under "activated charcoal" when it is heated at 200c or above (twice the boiling point) in an atmosphere of either (a) carbon dioxide, or (b) water. This leaves a lot of options, but the simplest...a) Take a piece of bread. (b) slap it on a fairly hot pan. Leave it until the side away from the pan starts to turn golden-brown. The crust, rising steam, and the like traps CO2 and H2O in the matrix of the bread. Scrape out the blackened bits, grind to a powder, and let air for a few hours. Why let air for a few hours? Because - it's absolutely saturated with benzene - great for meth cooks, but bad for your health. Once the excess benzene has evaporated, you have a fine, black, powdered activated charcoal. (a) Ghetto method - grab a styrofoam cup, poke holes in the bottom, glue a coffee filter over, fill with activated charcoal, stick another coffee filter on top - and you're good to go, will filter most active substances. (b) SuperMask - like the ghetto method, but use an organic vapor mask (hardware & painting supplies) instead of a coffee filter. These things will stop most gas attacks anyways (including CN/CS/OC), so the "two ounces of activated charcoal" just means that your mask has a FUCKLOAD of overkill. have fun
edit:If ya wanna get all fancy, you can grind it up REALLY fine, force it through a filter, and let it evaporate, creating your own little round black filter disks that you can change in and out - this is how most do it. You're getting less active filtration (less charcoal than if you were breathing through a whopping pile of it), but you can whip up a thousand little circles, pass 'em out, exchange 'em when one gets saturated, etc...

Or if you don't have time you can soak a rag in some vinegar this will stop some of the tear gas however it won't stop all of it. Organic Revolution I think you mentioned this to me awhile back.
Also if you're in a really shit situation and don't have time to soak a rag in vinegar then there's not much options except to piss on a rag. :/
It's also wise to carry a lemon around with you as tear gas stings a lot.
T-shirt sleeves are really good for rags as you don't have to tie them you just pull the sleeve over you're head and over you're mouth and nose.
Black Swimming goggles are also useful when against tear gas because first of all they protect you're eyes from the gas and second of all they disguise you're eye's so the po po can't identify you.

CS teargas cant be stopped with a mask alone....if your prolonged to it the mask is ineffective. CS also attacks and enters the body through means of the eyes and even a little bit in the ears. Goggles are recommended as well as some type of hat (enough to cover the ears).

Donnie- Lemons have anything to do with stinging? Please explain.

there should be one single topic (with just the way how to make it, no replies) for things like this and then pinned.

i dont understand, there should be discussion for diy, so you can see what worked and what didnt and discuss how to do it, and whatnot.

The lemons act as a neutralizer and it eases the stinging because the tear gas affects the skin.
I’ve also herd that if it get it in you’re mouth you should not drink water to clear it as it just makes it worse by spreading it down you’re throat. Someone said the best thing to do is rinse you’re mouth and spit the water out.

if you get it in your mouth use homemade lemonade and wash out your mouth, or a serious chemical reaction will happen.

*update..... for goggles make sure you turn em inside out on the top of your head when not wearing em so they dont fog up......but then the insides are suseptable to getting dirty so careful.....
.......and no "newkindofsoldier"....these topics should always be open for discussion......thats how we learn more.........

yea i know but its way easier if you like can get to the shit you want. For example if you like have this demonstration in a few hours and word reaches you there might be some serious trouble, then it would be like very useful if there is one single topic with all the info you want. So you dont have to look like everywhere.
These kind of topics are good too dont get me wrong, but in addition to these there should be like one with tips and ingredients for makin stuff you might need.

Lets put the collective mind to work. I am quite often in situations that have very recently become extremely dangerous due to police. They are ripping up permits and attacking people on camera. They are attempting to confiscate the cameras beforehand, but I need something I can use (such as a bandana) that would retain is gas-mask capabilities.
I can wear goggles around my neck, but I wont have time to piss on a rag.
Any ideas to try?

You can get activated charcoal for cheap at any pet store, they sell it for fish tank filters.

I wonder if I could somehow coat a bandana in that. a bandana and a pair of goggles would be easy to just have on me at all times.
Organic Revolution

no, soak a vinger onto the bandana.
Enragé
25th August 2005, 17:11
bottle of water, small bag of charcoal, make the bandana wet, put the charcoal on it and rub it out over the bandana
would that work?
ah well its just an idea

I need something that would stay in the Bandana for several hours. I wont have time to scream at the police to quit trying to suprise me with gas, I need to make my gas mask.

bring lemon and vinger with you, if you soak it reall fast it will stop the tear gas. this has worked for me, but only for a 2 hour time period. also you make the gasmask at home and carry it in a pack.

Now it would seem I will need to get a backpack...
I am thinking about taking one of the instruments and making the end screw off so it can be used to blow saline solution into the air to disable other gas masks, or Cayenne Peppers in a dog emergency.

Surplus shops will sell activated gas masks for a few bucks...good ones might be $100 USD or so. For thought,, if in a riot situation and someone throws a Tear Gas grenade in your direction you could temporarily stop the effects of the gas by using an organic acid an a layered bandana..ie/ acetic (vinegar) or Uric (urine) acid will work....its what was used in WWI against Chlorine, Sulphur Mustard gas. It worked for a short time.... after the gas has enough time to interact with the acidified cloth it is rendered useless. This might take several minutes depending on the concentration of the gas in air. ----your eyes still will sting like a mother fucker, unless you have goggles or something like that..

yes, it feels as though you get choked when it first hits you. it burns the eyes, and sticks to the skin ' i used non organic soap that day' and burns like a *****.. last for 20 to 30 min.

why dont some of the people with gas masks just pick up the shot canisters of tear gas and throw them in the nearby mcdonalds or other corporate store to prevent them from affecting the crowd  no in seriousness, can they be thrown in a trash can, etc. to make them less effective.
Fascist-Hunter
29th August 2005, 06:26
If you can find a trahs bin with a lid on it so that it can be closed ---> yes
putting it in an open trash bin will not really work, especially when it's a very windy/stormy day.
if you find a way to open a sewer, just kick that thing in.

won't it be bad for you to use urine on ur bandana cuz thats like all amonia. and doesnt a rag soaked in water give some protection. and isn't there some powder you can run the rag through like chalk dust, cus chalk is ediable so theres definatily no damage. ive heard this somewhere

i'm not sure about that. all i know is that these russian versions works (that one which red orchestra posted a picture of).
if you throw that thing into a metal trash bin --> no problem, close the lid and its done. i can't burn steel/iron. haven't tried plastic bins but i think that organic revolution is right at that point; it wouldn't work.
the easiest way is to find an open sewer, unfortunately the sewers will often be sealed/closed during demonstrations and can hardly be opened.

If leather gloves are strong enough to pick up a cannister with I think that leather boots (non steel-tipped) should be fine for kicking the can.

Could you not put something over the Tear Gas grenade? Such as a metal pan or something?
Also, how can one check if their gas mask works? Wouldn't like to find out too late that mine doesnt work lol.
And can someone explain why vinegar and lemon soaked material help against tear gas effects? Why not cover all your clothes in vinegar so it cant affect any of your skin?

25th October 2005, 19:28
Waterproof clothing is good. The best mask for CS gas is a British army respirator. Put an elasticated cord into the hem of your hood and you can get a good seal. If you get one from a surplus store make sure there isn't red tape or paint round the edge of the canister - this means the canister is for drill purpose only as it no longer works. (Before anyone says blue, blue is for munitions.)
If you plan on using swimming goggles take note: the seal between the eyepiece and the periorbital skin is achieved through a ring of either rubber or foam. Please please PLEASE make sure you use rubber ones because if you use foam YOU WILL LOSE SKIN, PAINFULLY!!!

Yeah, most people who carry a soaked bandana pre-soak it and carry it in a sandwich bag.
Maalox is basically milk of magnesia. Makes your eyeballs feel minty (no seriously). Make sure it is the magnesium hydroxide based one, don't get one with alcohol cos it inflicts untold pain on the eyes.
