Sandanista Liberation Front (http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandanista)

In short, the Sandanista's have been in opposition since 1990 but remain a force in politics.

Im pretty sure the FSLN is the second most popular party in nicaragua

If ya want to learn more about the FSLN and Carlos Fonseca then read "Sandinista" by Matilde Zimmerman.

They lost the elections to the US puppet terrorists and ever since, they have never really had any power. Kind of like democrats in the USA. They try to get things done but republicans prevent anything liberal from taking effect.

I was reading several weeks back by this right-wing "expert" in Latin America who wrote an article that the Sandinistas could very well win the presidential election in 2006. But that is what they say every election year in Nicaragua. The Sandinistas are one of the 2 major political parties in Nicaragua. Ortega has run several times and has won once in 1984---the U.S. refused to recognize Ortega as the winner even though it was a fair election.

he U.S. refused to recognize Ortega as the winner even though it was a fair election

I wish the rest of the world would apply that same bullshit methodology to us, ie the 2000 elections...

1. They [Sandanistas] are now reformist
2. They need to ditch Ortega
3. There is some talk about some of the Sandanistas breaking off and starting a militant wing again
4. The U.S. thinks the Sandanistas will win in 06, or at least have a very good chance. Which is why earlier this year they accused them of having weapons like rocket launchers and demanding they be destroyed, and now are supporting a fringe group of Miskito Indians who are after 20 years accusing the FSLN of genocide.

Here are stories: About the weapons (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4627779) and about (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050819/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/nicaragua_indians;_ylt=AjseeM2xPXhFCVpfF1pX.Dm3IxI F;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl) the Indians
