No need to be so gleeful, their hardly hurting America by shooting each other. In El Salvador they have 2 of the biggest street gangs in the world, and are constantly waring with each other. Boys aged 13 and 14 are killing each other.

While U.S. policy in Latin America should bare the blunt of the blame. How can so many lost lives be good in any way. Especially as U.S. policy is so reactionary and will end up harming the region even more.

If you're from the U.K. theres a good chance you will have seen "18 with a bullet" on BBC 3. It was about this gang and was one the most depressing programs I've seen.

The song is called Ghetto by Akon.

Honduras has much worse gangs than El Salvador.

This whole Mara Salvatrucha shit really blows me away, b/c I remember when I was really young growing up in California there were tons of gangs here. MS was a small, predominatly Los Angeles gang, and while other state wide gangs have died away, MS has grown out of control. Its so well known, that ppl are calling ALL Salvadorans "Salvatruchos" and it pisses me off cuz I really don't want to be labelled in that light..

MS stems from kids who were orphaned or from families that fled El Salvador to the U$ illegally usually ('cause remember...ES was "DEMOCRATIC" so no Visa's for Salvadorans). So, these kids who were traumatized by war and death came here with parents who would have their labor exploited, and live in the slums.... this fed into what MS has become. What's worse is that all these kids who get arrested for something, are undocumented so they are then deported back to ES. These criminals, murderers, etc. return to ES to wreek havoc on the civilians.

On top of all this, we have all these soldiers who were trained during the war to kill and torture who now have amnesty for their crimes, and have no other way to sustain their families but to kidnap for ransoms.

All of these elements rising from the bloody civil war of 12 years, have made ES the most violent country in Latin America. According to the UN Development Program called "Sociedad Sin Violencia"/"Society Without Violence" reports more than 10,000 persons were murdered in El Salvador between 2001 and 2004 compared to the 75,000 deaths during the war. Source (http://www.violenciaelsalvador.org.sv/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=166)

It doesn't help that the economic and labor conditions for the working class hasn't improved either, creating an unbearable situation.

Excuse me but this is one of the most "far from reality" statements I´ve ever read!!!
These kids are the result of U.S interventions, violence(military and economic).
They are not only poor, but excluded from the society and their administrators(U.S puppets) don´t care about them.
The governments of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua privatized every single thing during the nineties, deepening the poverty in those countries. The result: children without opportunities( health, education, home, food) and vulnerable to each and every kind of abuse.
The gangs are just the result of globalization, capitalism and corporate greed where the people is nothing more than a thing you can buy or sell.
The only way "to kick the U.S in the ass real good" will be the election of a president like Hugo Chávez who brought back dignity and self-esteem to Venezuela. Did you know how he call these kids "Children of the Motherland" instead of street´s children. With that in mind he is changing the life of many kids in Venezuela by giving them all the opportunities they deserve.
