In 1995, President Fidel Castro spoke at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, NYC. The almost entirely Black audience was very enthusiastically pro-Cuba and anti- typical American government. For example, when Elombe Brathe, head of the Patrice Lumumba Coalition and chair for the meeting, asked the audience, "Who would you rather come to Harlem, Fidel or Giuliani?", they replied "Fidel, Fidel!"
At some point, President Castro told the audience a story about members of the Congressional Black Caucus who had come to visit Cuba. One representative from Mississippi related how some of the towns in his district didn't have access to doctors. Fidel immediately offered his support to the representative, saying he would lend aid to the U.S., as he does to other third world countries in need. He went on to offer scholarships in his universities to those Americans in need of education and too poor to pay for it.

How come Fidel travel to Harlem if the US has tried to assasinate him hundreds of times?

I think he was there for some UN thing. It would be pretty low if they assasinated a world leader when he was invited into the country.

At that moment, cuba was struggling to survive economically thanks to the fall of the soviet union. I would say that this was just a display of statesmanship and looking for support amongst the american populace, now that cuba was more threatened than ever.

Yeah this is something amazing. But it goes to show the ideological differences between capitalism and communism. I mean, you won't hear of a capitalist country giving aid unless it benefits them in return (i.e. they get publicity, they get their hands on resources, they are developing a labour pool, etc..). Props to Castro on this one, quite noble of him.

No, although Cuba is a poor country, there is a major difference among the U.S and Cuba: SOLIDARITY.
The U.S spends huge amount of money in war, weapons, etc. instead of improving the life of millions around the world. In fact, The capitalist policies (supported by the U.S) killed in only one decade almost 70 million small children.
Cuba is using their few economic resourses to help people around the world. For example: The Latin American University of Medicine is giving FREE EDUCATION TO THE POOR PEOPLE OF THE WORLD. Yes, FREE medical school!!!! 50 AMERICANS ARE ATTENDING NOW.
In Cuba they receive an education based on community oriented service, ethics and a humanitarian sense of medicine.
RIGHT NOW CUBA HAS 23.964 HEALTH COOPERANTS IN 72 COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD. 17.013 OF THEM ARE DOCTORS.

There are 88 U.S. students at ELAM, 85 percent of them members of minority groups and 73 percent of them women. Recruitment and screening are handled by the Interreligous Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO), a New York-based interfaith organization. Applicants are required to have a high-school diploma and at least two years of premedical courses, to be from poor communities, and to make a commitment to return to those communities. Students who don't speak Spanish start early with intensive language instruction. Glover and Medina get home about once a year. They report that living conditions are spare and English textbooks hard to come by, but they are well taken care of and the education is rigorous.

I'd rather have nothing to do with these faith/religious groups, but other than that, it sounds like a very good program. It won't be like 1 1/2 to 2 years before I can apply for Medical School, but is there like a maximum of students they'll take from any given country per year? Anyone have a link to the actual school, and how to apply?
