I heard from one source the CIA may have been involved and then from other sources that say it was a domestic matter entirely.

This document (http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/news/20000919/01-01.htm) detail US involvement in Chile. If they didn't actively back the coup, they certainly weren't complaing about it.

Thanks. Some of those propaganda activities are similar to what they are doing in Venezuela today.

Democratically elected leftist president of Chile in the 70s; overthrown and killed in the 1973 military coup of General Augusto Pinochet.

I think the book The CIA's Greatest Hits by Mark Zepezaur says something about this. If it doesn't, it was still a good book.

According to american sources allende wanted to establish fidel-style socialism.
Allende was a socialist and given room to act, Chile would have been much better off than the capitalist shithole it is now.

Though they deny instigating the '73 coup, they did support Pinochet afterwards. I only glanced over the document in the link provided by Sir Aunty Christ, but I did notice that it mentioned Operation Condor. The C.I.A. knew about the operation and provided intelligence to it and received from it as well. Under the operation, Chile and it's allies gathered intelligence on basically anyone deemed a threat to their power. Operations included intelligence gathering, torture, and assassinations, not just within the participating nations, but internationally as well. A bunch of sick shit. <_<

I find it hard to believe that a Marxist would kill himself after a defeat. I've never come across a Marxist who justs gives up.

The CIA for certain played a role in the overthrow and killing of Allende, and most definitely played a role in installing Pinochet.

Salvador Allende was murdered in the air bombing of La Moneda Chilean presidential palace after he refused to resign under the pressure of fascist military led by general augusto pinochet on september 11, 1973. The CIA did participate in the coup, as well as Nixon and Henry Kissinger since they provided millions of dollars to sabotage the socialist government and funded secretly the facsist military. I personally consider Salvador Allende as a great sorce moral example to all revolutionaries, his last speech, hours before he was killed, is very inspiring and emotional...so can listen to it here:

here is a short biography of allende and his last moment

..but the best book iīve ever read about Chilean socialist experience and the reign of terror that followed after the coup is "THE MURDER OF ALLENDE AND THE END OF CHILEAN WAY TO SOCIALISM", so heart-breaking and well documented.

metalero, do you see him as more of a revolutionary or a reformist? Or perhaps something in between.

Do you realise the kind of death Allende would have suffered if he was caught alive by pinochetistas?

Allende was probably killed herocially resisting with what little arms he had. Although he made his mistakes, the biggest one being not arming his supporters, he is an admirable figure who went down fighting.

Watch the movie called "Missing (1982)". Not to be confused with "The Missing".
It's about American's living in Chile at the time of the coup, the main character wrote for a socialist newspaper, met some US Army Officials at a beach right before the coup, really interesting, true story....go see it!

The movie was about Charles Horman, who was tortured and executed at the stadium after the coup..... His wife is still seeking justice to this day.

Allende was a revolutionary since he applied marxist theory to create working class consciousness and organize workers to take over the government and reach socialism according to the historical and geographical conditions in Chile.
He founded the socialist party in Chile and as a senator always advocated for workers emancipation and social transformation in chile. At the time of the cold war, he called himself a marxist and in only three years of government carried out expropiation of Copper mines and basic industries that were in the hands of multinationals. he had total support of the working class, who had achieved a high level of conciousness and organization..However, he didnīt use this support to defend the revolution against the armed attack of the fascist and the imperialism. The workers organization was highly developed and active, they had occupied factories and controlled many of the industrial areas of the cities. they also asked for arms since it was known that the military was plannig the bloody coup. Allende was a deep humanist and he used peaceful methods to achieve socialism in chile, something imposible if u donīt arm the people to defend their economical and social achievements.

I heard Allende was offered safe passage to Cuba by the military as the coup started, but rejected it.

Yes thatīs true. That offer was made by General von Schowen, but Allende declined the offer by saying:
"Tell General von Schowen that the president of Chile does not flee in a plane.
As he knows how a soldier should act, I will know how to fulfil my duty as President of the Republic".
Who killed Salvador Allende?
The U.S government, the CIA and the Chilean Oligarchy supported by the military.
"I donīt see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist
due to the irresponsability of its own people. The issues are much too
important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves".
Henry Kissinger
"Of all the leaders in the region, we considered Allende the most inimical to our interests. He was vocally pro-Castro and opposed to the United States. His internal policies were a threat to Chilean democratic liberties and Human Rights".

there are taped communications at the day of the coup between the generals, from which u can understand that the proposal of the plane to cuba, would be followed by the bombing of that plane. they said something.."that plane will never make it..." The Battle of Chile, Documentary by Patricio guzman

Yes, Salvador Allende and his comrades defended La Moneda for about 4 hours before they were finally defeated by the fascist traitors. Allende died fighting for the democracy and the freedom of the Chilean people. The most reliable sources say he was shot twice in the throat and four times in the chest.
When the fascist dictatorship finally took power, they began to spread the infamous rumor about Allendeīs suicide, but that is just another Pinochetīs vile lie.
