"The next four years we will continue to strengthen our homeland defenses. We will strengthen our intelligence-gathering services. We will reform our military. The military will be an all-volunteer army."
George W. Bush, September 30, 2004

"I consider myself a civilian," said Rick Howell, a major from Tuscaloosa, Ala., who said he thought he had left the Army behind in 1997 after more than a decade flying helicopters. "I've done my time. I've got a brand new baby and a wife, and I haven't touched the controls of an aircraft in seven years. I'm 47 years old. How could they be calling me? How could they even want me?"

So, what does "volunteer" mean, anyway? Do you know? Does the President know? Does anyone care?

Is it still an all-volunteer army if the volunteers are serving against their will?
Maybe some of the people who supported the War On The Unlawful Use Or Threatened Use Of Force Or Violence By A Person Or An Organized Group Against People Or Property With The Intention Of Intimidating Or Coercing Societies Or governments, Often For Ideological Or Political Reasons (a.k.a. the War on Terrorism) should think about signing up. It sounds like the army needs people.
