So I'm on my school's newspaper this year (along with archpremier) and I've been throwing around the idea of having my own communist column called Victor's Red Square. Clever, eh?

The other staff members think it's pretty great, but I'm not sure the editors and teacher will be down with it.

In any case, I'll definitely get a chance to write some opinion pieces.

Any suggestions for archpremier and I?

Oh, and I'm also applying to be entertainment editor. That would kick ass.

Anyways... How do we make this high school rag a tool of revolutionary mobilization?

Don't get into hardcore marxist theory. Use more abstract references and things that would relate to a teenagers life. An almost crimethinc-ish approach, except more true to communist theory. Another thing you could do is publish brainfucks with factual support, or sympathy/tear jerker articles, thats sure to get some girls attention.

The one BIG problem you will have with this is how much freedom your school paper has with regards to publishing articles and freedom from censorship.

1.) Does the newspaper's editor have the final say in what articles are published?

2.) Does ANY other authority in the school have the right to censor what goes into the paper?

3.) Do the school authorities reserve ANY rights to close the paper down or suspend ANY writers who make 'subversive' articles?

My gut instinct tells me that the answer to ALL three questions is a YES!

No school gives REAL freedom to it's students, they only give them 'citizenship' classes and phoney student 'elections', to make students FEEL that they have some say and rights, when in reality they DON'T!

My advice would be to IGNORE the schools paper and MAKE YOUR OWN.

Do you have likeminded friends who would help you set up a new paper?

All you need is some A4 paper, a PC, a printer (preferably with colour) and a stapler.

Besides that you also need some good articles, Ill help you out on that if you want!

The best way to subvert the system is to always work from OUTSIDE the system, as the system only offers FAKE CHOICE and FAKE FREEDOM.

Sorry, but I'm not gonna start a revolution at my school. I don't have the balls or perseverance. I'm serious about communism, but I'm gonna save it for things with actual results. A communist club would be a good idea, but a newspaper would never be able to be taken seriously.

The editors are students and would let me print anything that is non-offensive and of minimal literary quality. I think. So would the sponsor. I don't think they would prevent me from printing what I would want to. I'm not gonna call the student to take up arms against the system. I just want to let them know what's going on with communist and leftist movements around the world and write what I think about communism and its solutions to our society's ills. Without putting myself at risk. It sounds horribly reformist, I know. But there is nobody else with whom I can do anything more drastic. I'm practically alone.

I may suggest that if you get radical and the school censors you call some comrades at the ACLU.

Might wanna cloak yourself a little more. I wrote for my High School newspaper and perpetuated my ideas, but I didn't make it bluntly obvious that I was in favor of communism. Just write about the plight of the workers, they'll just think you're a "liberal".

If you want to be obvious about it, that's cool too.

I know at my school, there were flyers up on the halls advertiseing a communism club, but the very next day they were all taken down. I was told by a teacher that it was a joke, but I just think that the administration just didn't want a bunch of left-wing teenagers bugging them all the time to change shit.

So today I was assigned to writte a "staff editorial", which probably means I can writte my commie musings. Yesterday, when we were suggesting stories for the upcoming issue, I suggested various communist stories, including my own column, which I doubt they'll ever give me... but this is something.

The communist column idea would never work at my school, The Academy of American Studies. The idea of such a column doesn't fit well with the school theme. Plus the school censors the paper by not allowing articles with criticisms of the school. This is because the paper is given to all the parents who attend the biannual parent teacher conferences. It's simply a propaganda piece to make the parents think the school is great and without any problems.

Writing about ideals involving communism (although not necessarily mentioning communism, it will raise up many peoples' flags and walls!) or the inherent flaws of capitalism would be great ideas. By exposing holes in capitalism you're not directly pointing to "radical" theories, but all the while people will be thinking to themselves while reading: "What are some alternatives, solutions, or things I can do to regarding capitalism?"

I've really wanted to do the same but there is no school paper in my high school. =/

Good luck and power to you friend.

Write a story about all of the wage slaves at Wal-Mart who are paid minimum wage and struggle to get health insurance and raise there children. Maybe you will convince people to not shop at wal-mart.

Pretty soon at my new school I will have to drive right past a HUGE Wal-Mart distribution center just to get to school. Im trying to find an alternative so I don't have to clean up the puke in my car when I get home everyday.

One good thing John Kerry supported was a minimum wage increase.

i think that you should not bother with the school paper, because it is so censored.. and make your own zine. i did that at my school now i have to write an issue every month.

I think I'm gonna do the opinion piece on the employee free choice act... it was reintroduced into congress on April 19th... this wouldn't be too controversial, not too revolutionary, something that high school students can dig, and I can definitely throw some kickass statistics at them. Articles that relate to student life are highly encouraged... Articles that will go ever everyone's head are highly discouraged. I think this is a fairly good idea for this story.

anyone have any other suggestions?

School Newspapers eh?

I highly doubt you could get "victors red square" in a school newspaper. That is, if it is anything like the Cashmere Circuit.....

Dont take NOS. Dont smoke P. Dont take BZP. Get your stupid vaccine and be nice to the teachers.

btw I really like the name Victors Red Square. :D

it's even better, because for the last few years, we've had an enviromentalist column called Cooey's Green Corner. Cooey is the writter's surname.
