WARNING! MAD POSTER!
How can you consider 2Pac the greatest rapper of all time? Although brilliant he never consistently displayed his lyrical brilliance and sense of compassion, instead putting out commercial, demeaning records like All Eyez On Me. Perhaps 'Me Against The World'-era 2Pac might get into my top ten but the hype that built up around him after his death has never been truly justified in his work.
As well, how could overlook pioneers such as Rakim, EPMD, N.W.A or KRS-ONE? Although both Dead Prez and Immortal Technique are excellent rappers and have agreeable political views they are not legends...yet.
I don't mean to go on too much but putting Big L in there? He was unique and almost certainly would have become one of the best rapper's ever had his promise not been cut short but his legacy was not great enough (one excellent album before his death, one excellent album after his death) to merit a place in anyone's 'Top 5 best rapper's ever'.
Sorry for critiscising so much but that is my opinion. Now, you can now attack me for my choices...
5 - Big Punisher
4 - KRS-ONE
3 - The Wu-Tang Clan
2 - Rakim
1 - Nas

You know what screw this, all of native tounge, wu-tang, big pun and old school fat joe, this shit is too hard, I give up.
Afro-conscience Alternative Jazz Hip-Hop. I think Biggie and Pac are over rated and I'm the only ones with enough balls to say it. The mic is a paintbrush and a track is your canvas. Paint poetry.

I don't listen to much rap/hip-hop, I'm much more of a rock/folk/country fan. To be honest though here are what I'd consider my top few:
1)Public Enemy (fucking amazing)
2)Zearle (only heard 2 songs but he's bloody amazing)
3)The Streets (I dunno if you'll count them as hip hop, but what else could you call them? And Mike Skinner's a genius)

Just to set the record straight, Alexander the great did not deface the sphinx because it looked African. It was the French, and the we're using it for target practice. <_<

In no particular order mine are Wu-Tang, KRS-1, Public Enemy, Dead Prez, and Mos Def. I could just as easily list EPMD, Erik B. & Rakim, Afrika Bambaataa, and The Roots, The Beastie Boys, and Run-DMC as well. And no, I don't like N.W.A despite my love of old school. Eazy-E was a dirty fucking slimeball.

Mike Jones, 50? Please stay of this thread if you don't know what your talkin about...and if you wanna learn then go get some of the shit we're mentioning.
Nas was good before he made that cash, Illmatic is one of my favorite albums of all time. If you haven't heard it you shouldn't be posting in this thread. Illmatic keeps my faith in Nas, I just think he's been corrupted by money and power, not so suprising...JC1 go listen to 'the World is Yours' or 'Genesis', in fact that whole albums dope as shit.
Fuck all forms of gangsta rap and Eazy has no style. "1 2 3 and to the 4 it's Eazy motherfuckin E with some chrome to your dome"...that shit is whack as hell and has nothing on cats like Aesop Rock.

Oh, and about Tupac, he was a lot smarter then he put across on one of his albums, most know his mom was a panther so that made pretty aware of the left, he just sold out, put his values behind makin money, and that's why I don't respect him as much. A person is defined by their actions, and he doesn't some up to much...

But Tupac.
Doesn't organising truces between rival gangs, and lessening the effects of gangs on the communities count for anything?

agree ... i think every one should watch " Tupac : resurrection” and lisin to the progression of his albums . I think you’ll see that he never forgot his values since the beginning he just put them in a different context .. I think he was torn between trying to maintain his social political thinking and music and still have “street creed” so that he wouldn’t loose any of his fans or supporters .. its sad how he died before he got to make the mark on the world that I think he wanted to make instead of being seen as just another ”gangster rapper” by the mass media and public , at least there are true fans that know that the “gangster” side of Pac was only about 5% of who he truly was.

yeha big contradiction that’s what im trying to say, probably wasn’t very clear ;) ...... Pac said many times that when he or some one else say words like "ho" or what ever he’s not talking about all woman but those who in fact act like "ho's" and don’t have enough respect for them selves to act like a strong woman …..not trying to start a debate just trying to say that I got a lot of respect for Pac and he shouldn’t be blown of as benign an over hyped “gangsta” rapper , cause hes was and still is a hell of a lot more then just a one dimensional person

First of all, here's what I keep in my CD case at all times:
1. The Coup (how could you miss these comrades?!)
2. Public Enemy (including their new album)
3. BDP (pre-"Edutainment")
4. Tribe Called Quest (earlier stuff)
5. Tupac Shakur (studio cuts -- a comrade of mine knew him personally)
6. Deltron 3000 (formerly Del Tha Funky Homosapien)
7. Anti-Pop Consortium (I like the underground)
8. Dilligaf (again, from my comrade)
9. Digable Planets ("We be reading Marx where I'm from")
10. Poor Righteous Teachers (sorta religious, but still quality)
11. X-Clan (their first album)
12. Paris (gotta have Paris in there!)
13. Parliament Funkadelic (not hip hop, but without them most hip-hop performers would have no beats)
Second, those who like to dismiss Tupac as either apolitical or even backward did not understand him. Near the end of his life, Tupac had begun to promote the idea of founding a political organization similar to the Black Panthers but "for poor Blacks and whites". He even did an interview with Covert Action Quarterly about this, and, according to the person who told me this (the same person who knew him personally), was trying to get Biggie in on it too. Remember, Tupac's parents were both Panthers, so he had the connections and ready access to the know-how. Plus, he obviously had the name recognition and gravitas to do it.

Necro Oner: illmatic is a tight album ... but thats not an excuse for Nas coping a Bourgoise pose.
Miles: How far did pac' get along with this idea? Also, what would the point of geting Biggie on board? Biggie was a suka MC and a Bling-Bling kinda guy. Not to mention BS (Biggie Smallz) was a big fake (His momz even said that he never had a "One roof shack" or went to sleep hungry .

From what I know of this (which is limited), it didn't get beyond the general talking phase. He had contacted some people he knew back when he was somewhat active in leftwing politics (including the person who talked to me about this) and talked to them about it, but that was only a month or two before he was killed.
As for Biggie, my guess is that he wanted to have him on board in order to bridge the "east-west" gulf in the hip-hop nation. Plus, under all the "bling-bling" trash-talking, he had something of a political mind and a crude class consciousness. I think Tupac knew what he was doing.

Yes, and who cares about the quality of Biggie if he was still trying to help with something important? You don't need to be particularly intelligent or truthful to move the masses. You just need charisma and popularity.

This has got to be the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard. It reminds me of the argument I got out of a white guy once, claiming he wasn't a racist because there's just such a huge difference between the use of the word "niggah" and "nigger". My question is, why the fuck would use the word in the first place then?
I'm sorry, until I actually see some hard evidence that not only was Tupac not a sexist but actually planning some sort of activist group, I'm going to view him as I always have. A two-bit street hoodlum that was never really any better than any of the other gangster rappers. So he wrote "Keep Your Head Up." So the fuck what?!? The sun will even shine on a dog's ass some days.

Tupac was affilitaed with many political prisoners, those who were in the Panthers as well as the BLA. Mutulu Shakur, Sekou Odinga, and other New Afrikans. He did have the voice of the young black male in the ghetto and he did try to use that and turn it into a posative. His songs many contain contradictions but, everyone has those. He did more songs about the struggle, the struggle to get out of the ghetto, out of prison, and get to freedom than most other rappers. He did develop what he called the "Thug Life Code" which was rules for the righteous thug to follow. Most people will just tend to focus on the negative though. For every "ho" there is a keep your head up, for every I get around there is a Brenda's Got A Baby.
