This is far worse.

Amerikkkan:
Your DARPA chief Poindexter has a dream that soon your government will have "total information awareness" on you and the rest of the people. On the wall in his office is written "Scienta Est Potentia" (knowledge is power). close to 1984 through evolution.
On wednesday the house of representatives passed this law regulation with 229 against 121 votes. If the senate also wants it then only Dubyah can stop it (why would he?).
A giant database will be made, containing information like what websites you visit, magazines you subscribe, credit card use, school degrees, e-mails sent and received, toll plazas you pass, neighbor complaints, and of course cameras will e put up any place.
And they say amerikkka is the land of the free.
And just because you're not amerikkkan doesn't mean you're safe. They also want to collect worldwide information.

It will pass and be signed.
If there's anything optimistic in this gloomy scenario, it's that the sheer AMOUNT of information they gather will OVERWHELM their ability to utilize it or even keep track of it. Yes, they'll have some kind of partial profile on everyone or nearly everyone...but it will be of necessity incomplete and probably somewhat corrupt as well.
The coming decades will be grim ones...but not necessarily hopeless. What WE and those like us DO is also a factor in the social equation.

Well, we already have ECHELON, so I'm not sure that this is anything new, which doesn't, of course, mean it's not terrible.
hawarameen, it's legal for the US to spy on UK residents. In fact, that's one of the things about ECHELON, you spy on us, we spy on you, and then the information is shared, though the UK has charged that the US is using it to give US corporations a boost.
Akbar, this is about the US government keeping a record of all electronic purchases, websites visited, email sent, etc, on all of its citizens. It's a disgusting violation of what US "patriots" claim is so wonderful about the US in the first place.

That is extremely draconian and if such a thing were to go ahead it would soon be destroyed by hackers and others alike. People can be treated as cattle, but they will not be. You can not keep tabs on someone who doesn't have an address, and dosn't want to be found.

In society there is no privacy, nor will there ever be in the true sense of the word. The bureaucracy have the ability to spy on anyone, but they do not have the numbers do such a thing. They simply sift through the information, and try to interpret what they 'recieve'. There is no privacy, but it is possible to escape their grasp. They are not everywhere (having a most wanted list proves this point).

Having reviewed this more closely, I wish to revise my earlier statement. The IAO is far worse than Echelon, it would seem. I suggest everyone in the USA go look at the website (http://www.darpa.mil/iao/) for it. Amazingly devious, it is.
By the way, did you know that IAO is a Hellenized version of the Tetragrammaton, which is YWYH and where we get the words Yahweh and Jehovah from? It is the name of God. And take a look at the official logo for the agency, and two of the programs are named Babylon and Genisys. If I was one of those end-time Christian types, I'd be thinking that this was a sign of the Apocalypse.

HI Akbar,
I was wondering where you are from? Do you live in the US? or ever visited?
