You forget Slackware. It's my favourite.

www.slackware.com

It is a bit more UNIX-like. Oh, and if you like Slackware, you might also like Debian.

Only half of those links for me and I couldnt understandthe other 3 for obvious reasons.
And I've been thinking about switching to Linx, but I'm worrying about the compatability of Linux with most programs, I heard there is a version that can work with almost any program that works with Windows.

My favorite is Fedora Core.

And fuck the compatability, there is no mean to drop Windows if you won't drop the programs that only run on Windows systems. There is a Linux equivalent for almost any program you can think.

Clarksist, check out Knoppix.

It's a Linux distro that runs from a cd, and makes no changes to your current set up. If you like it, i'd recommend checking out Debian or Fedora Core 4.

Clarksist, you can install almost any distro while keeping your windows installation on the Hard Drive still. It's really not difficult at all if you've a slightly user friendly installation (SuSE is one of them). Just separate the drive into a linux partition and win partition (with partitions for swapping, etc) and use a bootloader such as GRUB (or any other.. a lot of distros have a bootloader with the installation disk) and then, upon booting your computer, you can choose between windows and linux.

In that manner, you can also access your windows files while using linux, which is extremely useful when windows crashes irrecoverably. I have a windows partition myself, but haven't used it in about a year.. I decided on keeping it mainly in case I wanted to ever do some gaming (which didn't happen). Even if you'd only use linux for web surfing, it's well worth it.. I've not had a single virus using linux, as opposed to damn near weekly viruses when I used to use windows.

Yeah, I recently got a Lindows rip-off and I'm gonna install it when I get the chance.

I was thinking about it after Encephelon and Mahkno gave me some advice, but I went on a friend's computer who had Linux.

I am sold.

It's possible to have Windows programs run on Linux. Google "Cedega" which is more for games and "WineX" (or "Wine", but I think it's WineX now) which is just for applications.

When I get some blank CDs, I'm going to update to FC4 and play Halflife 2 and Warcraft 3 :D

If you're on broadband then download your Distribution of choice, burn it to CD, re-partition your hard drive and away you go.

If you're not on broadband go to your nearest Magazine store and check out the Linux titles, many of them carry full Distributions on their cover disks.

Ubuntu Linux (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/) offer to send copies of their Distribution to you free of charge on CD.

If you have questions that need answering try Linux Questions (http://www.linuxquestions.org).

I'd recommend something like SuSE for a beginner, but there are all sorts of choices for you to make.

Cheers

I would wind up getting Linux if I knew how to use it.
