Leftists may claim that their activism is motivated by compassion or by moral principle, and moral principle does play a role for the leftist of the oversocialized type. But compassion and moral principle cannot be the main motives for leftist activism. Hostility is too prominent a component of leftist behavior; so is the drive for power. Moreover, much leftist behavior is not rationally calculated to be of benefit to the people whom the leftists claim to be trying to help. For example, if one believes that affirmative action is good for black people, does it make sense to demand affirmative action in hostile or dogmatic terms? Obviously it would be more productive to take a diplomatic and conciliatory approach that would make at least verbal and symbolic concessions to white people who think that affirmative action discriminates against them. But leftist activists do not take such an approach because it would not satisfy their emotional needs. Helping black people is not their real goal. Instead, race problems serve as an excuse for them to express their own hostility and frustrated need for power. In doing so they actually harm black people, because the activists' hostile attitude toward the white majority tends to intensify race hatred.
Notice the masochistic tendency of leftist tactics. Leftists protest by lying down in front of vehicles, they intentionally provoke police or racists to abuse them, etc. These tactics may often be effective, but many leftists use them not as a means to an end but because they PREFER masochistic tactics. Self-hatred is a leftist trait.
As we can see, the leftist's goal is not to "change the world" or altruistic in nature, but mainly a vehicle in which the leftist can fulfill his or her emotional needs. For instance, this forum disallows so-called "nazis" to partake in debate not because the leftists do not want to destroy the arguments of "nazis", but because such groups are emotionally upsetting. Furthermore, the banning of such individuals ("nazis") and certain other ideologies allows the leftist to receive an emotional high from exerting dominance over their enemies. The fundamental psychology is no different than a gang of skinheads beating an African; the skinheads seek to exert dominance over the African, not because they feel he should be sent back to his home country.
The left enjoys perpetuating strawman arguments not for the sake of propaganda, but because they WANT to see their opposition in such a manner. The same also goes for those the leftist allows nesting under their wing. If someone is less intelligent because of genetics, then the leftist will DEMAND that person's manner is how the leftist WANTS them to be. Nobody is "stupid" (unless that person is an enemy of the leftist), but they are "misunderstood" or in poverty. This entails the refutation of genetic-based attributes and behavior, sex, evolution, and even reality itself; it should be no surprise the modern leftist movement(s) are postmodernist havens where relativism and pluralism flourish.
Leftists also require others to be involved in their daily activities. Protests, concerts, cries for revolution, complaining, and other forms of activism always require other leftists to be present. This is, obviously, so because the leftist gains pleasure from the agreements of others and to agree with others. Leftist icons and images reflect this often, as images usually show "the masses" rising up and revolution as a collective movement; such images could be of various hands in the air, or even the logo of this board at the upper right showing a group holding signs and protesting. The core is not to CHANGE things, though it may seem delightful to exert dominance, but socialize with others and find agreement because agreement yields a happy self-esteem.
