The US has always had an interest in Colombia. I saw a very good documentary called "Coca Mama". The US had set up these programs of paying the army to go around and rip all the coca plants out. The problem was that after they stormed a plantation, they were of the opinion that, 'ok crisis over.' It's a shame that they didn't put any real effort into the re-establishment of a liveable community. They pump a few dollars into somewhere and expect everything to be Ok.
That was an interesting article though, thanks.

I keep thinking about the proximity of Colombia to Venezuela and its oil. The US gov't doesn't give a rat's ass about Colombia or drugs. Oil, however, is a different story.
There are reports that some FARC members take refuge in Venezuela, and I'm wondering if the US wants to establish a presence there and then, in the interest of "protecting Colombia," venture into Venezuela, using the "war on terrorism" as an excuse. The coup didn't work, so perhaps direct intervention is next.

Whoa, sorry I wasn't clear. I was just explaining an insight i have had into the US/Colombia relations.:)
This is, be it accurate, obviously oil driven. Just like Iraq.

OIL ... that's about all you have to say ... the US government (especially Bush) are suckers ... they are so selfish and don't give a shit about other people ... it's exectly the same with the Iraq war ... my opinion:
NO BLUT FOR OIL!!!

I read an other US olan, that usea chilean ,peruvian argentinan and ecuadorian troopps to invade Colombia and destroy de guerrillas in a series of important operations. The US has always tried to involve Venezuela in the Colombian situacion but the present goverment denies all help to the US comand. And has a bigger oposition agaisnt the US involvement after the coup.
