Depends. For the beginner, either the Chomsky Reader or Chomsky For Beginners.

But in general, I can only recommend "American Hegemony," as it is the only one of his books I've read.

What Uncle Sam really wants is a good one. I think it is sold in a four pack called the Chomsky Quartet with The Priveleged Few And The Restless Many, Secrets lies and Democracy and one other. A list of his books is usually located at the back of each. Another important one is manufacturing consent.

I've read a few Chomsky books and seen a few documentaries and interviews about him.
The book I enjoyed the most was "Government in the Future" where he outlines different forms of thought and how they play out, and then gives his opinion.
I also read "9/11" which is a series of interviews involving questions which revolve around the war on terror and the attacks. It was good, but the interview process got tiring as he often repeats ideas, because the interviews were at different times, etc... But the editor did a good job at minimizing this without destroying the ideas.
I also have, but haven't read, "Chomsky on Anarchism" mainly because it looks like a really heavy read. I would definitely recommend "Government in the Future" as it is a relatively easy read and it short.

Hope this helps.

I read 911 and it got rather repetitive. I am currently working through Hegemony or survival: America's uest for global dominance. It's a very good book. I think I will pick up " government in the Future" and Chomksy on Anarchism after this.

The best book to first expose you to Chomsky is "Pirates and Emperors, Old and New". Not only does Chomsky overwhelm the reader with facts but he overwhelms the reader with a more lucid writing style than most of his books. The Chomsky reader, I would suggest for those who really like Chomsky and want to get more into his Cold War / Nam ideologies; though ti does have an amazing biography at the beginning.

I flipped through it at a bookstore and it looks like a bunch of old material compiled as a book. I don't think anything Chomsky has written on Anarchism is very heavy reading.
