I'm glad the PIRA grasped that there's no chance of armed struggle being a successful tactic right now.

However it's sad that the only conclusion they could draw was to drift into the ranks of the ruling class.

We need an anti-imperialist movement that's organised and led by the working class, the only class now capable of finishing what was started in 1916. That's what the IRSP are attempting to work towards now.

I also think it's obvious that the occupied six counties of 'norn iron' are a failed state. The Brits have had to revert to direct rule since their 'moderates' that they need for power-sharing between protestants and catholics includes fascists like Trimble. That moderate middle is long gone anyway, replaced by Paisley.

And even if the six county state is revived, it will have the power to do nothing. It won't even be able to set its own budget! The revival of the Orange state with some extremely limited catholic participation (read: grovelling) is nothing for socialists to cheer. Our job is not to prop up any crumbling colonial state, but to give guidance and unity to our fellow workers.

And right now those workers are more divided by sectarian lines then they've ever been before.

I think i agree with oglach on this, ireland needs a real socialist party, but i think it is good that the ira has seen the sense in giving up its terror campagin.

I'm slightly confused by this, to be honest.

Basically, if the IRA is now saying armed struggle is illegitimate and useless, then they're saying that is HAS ALWAYS been those things because, what's changed?

Does a United Ireland look closer? No. Do the Imperialists look like leaving? No. Are the Loyalist thugs going to stop terrorising Nationalist areas? Doubt it.

I don't want to lecture the Irish on their own affairs, but as far as I can see this is a capitulation to Adams and his useless tactic of "bringing in" the Western Ruling classes to "put pressure on the British". If Adams thinks that the American political elites are going to start lecturing the British state on "imperialism" then he's more stupid than he looks.

For some reason I don't think some IRA members will be happy with this decision. I think there will be some small group that will still want to take up armed struggle.

I bet once they release they are getting no where with doing things politically, the IRA will form and things will all kick off again in 20 years time maybe.

I don't think this is the last we will hear of the IRA.

What IRA are we talking about? I guess Provos, they have always sold out their arms in exchange for political posts. They are nationalists opportunistic "middle-class" careerist who congratulates irish that have fought for the english army.

Then we have ONH(RIRA)/32CSM who initially shared goals with Provos, but refused to give up the armed struggle for the sake of Gerry Adams political career.

We also have CIRA/RSF. They have their Eire Nua, a kind of "socialist federal republic".
But they are often a little catious with socialism towards the national liberation so that they wont scare away the old foxes. They have some military activity, but lack access to as much equipment as the others.

And not to forget, the INLA/IRSP. www.irsm.org
At every IRA congress, the question on erasing every thing socialist from the platform is brought up. But the workers alwayts refuse and vote down the proposal.
The RSP however, refuse to compromise away the class struggle.
Besides that, I am not sure how good the RSP are.
