A friend who just returned form Cuba informed me that Cubans were Not allowed to Fish there. They can Buy fish from a market but are not free to fish for there own food. WTF??? This is simply mad if it holds any truth at all.
I have heard similar rumors that it is illegal for Cubans to have chickens or other livestock and many do so illegally by hiding them in their bathrooms and such..

I have never heard of this, but I wouldn't be suprised that a revisionist country would have such stupid policies.

You can Buy fish from a Market but you cannot take your son fishing for YOUR own personal catch. That is what I am being told, from a person who has no reason to lie and also is a very Left Thinking Individual. She and her husband just returned form Cuba for their Honeymoon.

Yeah the reason why is to stop people from starting home businesses, because Fidel orriginally gained power people were taking all of the products and selling it on their own. So in order to keep people from getting to rich by Privete Enterprise. It also helps keep the money from getting weaker if the money continues to go into a circle.

I heard there was a special tax on lobsters at one point, but I don't know about fishing.

fishing? ya thats bull dude

If you were talking about commercial fishing then that is a different story, the government regulates the industries in Cuba, ie. manufacturing, gov't depts, agriculture, aquaculture, cigar factories, where the profits go to the socialist government and are then used for public services and pay the wages of the workers.

It is true that the workers are not allowed to personally profit while working from tourists on vacation with yankee daller in their pocket, but it does happen, mostley on the street and behind closed doors.

But no, by all means pack your fishing rod. I am going to a wedding in Havana next spring and I may go fishing while I am there, The deep blue in the Carribean is home to many sharks and marlin, and many more tropical fish.

cheers

I visted a family when I went to Cuba and they had a pig in their yard. If it really is illegal (which I doubt) then it is certainly not enforced.
