View Full Version : Radical Careers and College

The idea of a "career" isn't exactly what you'd expect on this sort of forum, but eventually we have to face the world we live in. So, I'm asking the advice of the people on this forum, so that hopefully I can make some decisions that are both realistic but still compatible with my political beliefs.
1. Do you recommend going to college, getting a degree, etc., or learning a trade and doing some sort of labor work, like a plumber or construction worker?
2. If college, what college or kind of college would you recommend? Small college, large university, online?
3. If college, what kind of career/area of study would you recommend? Right now, I'm leaning towards either teaching or journalism, but I'd also like to move to another country.

I would suggest going to college because it is always important to be well educated. But for some people college isn't there thing, for them I'd recommend to do an apprenticeship at your local union. As for careers, I'm still wondering about that now. I'd like to get a degree in International Politics or something like that. But I'm not sure what kind of job I would get with that.

I suggest you quit school, buy a ticket to Russia and join a Communist party.

I too have been wondering about the same three questions lately. I can't believe that I will be a college student in a year, it seems to have creeped up on me. Yet I still don't feel like doing anything in regards to searching for a good college or looking for scholarships. The job that seems to be the most appealing at this current point in time seems to be that of a teacher.

I too am one year from college. I think I'll go to college, but afterwards I truly hope to leave the USA. If we are to be any sort of revolutionaries, what is the point in remaining in a nation that isn't likely to experience any real revolution for a long time? I've been thinking about taking some spanish in college and then going to Latin America. A career, I'm not sure about that. American culture places far too much emphasis on 'career' anyway. It isn't really that important.

Do what you think is best. Don't change your future because of politics.

Yeah be careful about that.
I was thinking about going into politcs but when you think about it you're just going to become another bureaucrat. Honestly what can you accomplish by doing that? Theres no place for lefties like us, it would just cause conflict and make you hate your life. I think the best thing to do would be to become a journalist and expose capitalism for what it is, even if you have to be subtle about it ;)

hm, why not going into politics?
just imagine the huge amount of money you can make; you could use that for the movement. why not? if you don't do this job there will be someone else who gets this job and he or she will probably use the money for worse things.
which college you choose depends on your skills. it is not important which college you pick but what you make out of your education.

Definitley go to college if you have the opportunity!
2. If college, what college or kind of college would you recommend? Small college, large university, online? That is totally up to you and what you're more comfortable with. I personally want to go to a big college with tons of students. I want to learn in a diverse enviroment.
3. If college, what kind of career/area of study would you recommend? Right now, I'm leaning towards either teaching or journalism, but I'd also like to move to another country.
That is also totally up to you. Major in something that interests you, not promises tons of money. If you're going to have a job you hate but makes tons of money, you're going to dread waking up in the morning no matter how much you're paid. If you ain't making shit but loving what you do, what's more important?...as long as you can pay the rent/mortgage haha.
Teaching and journalism are both great careers for a leftist. I want to be a photojournalist and do some exposing of my own. Try not to get into a political job cus you're probably just gonna end up becoming part of the system in the end too...and probably a pansy democrat as well.

In choosing such careers, you will become part of the very system you despise. Why not pursue the revolution you all claim to want rather than spending your time on your career?

Well I'm off to university I got a big grant from my local council because of my families financial problems. I'm going to be studying archeology, because it sounds interesting. I do not want to pursue a career after university, I ‘m just going to University because the subject archeology sounds interesting.
But when I leave university, I don’t know if I can be arsed getting a job, I’m thinking about the option of squatting and stuff. Or I may go off and learn a trade who knows. I can’t be arsed planning for the future.
But to answer the topic question go to university or college if you want to it’s up to you.

I'd rather say - "don't change your politics because of your future!"
To elaborate, I don't think you should choose a career (or anything), and then change your personality/ideology/beliefs because of that - whatever the reason for your choice!

If I had to choose a career, I suppose I'd like to be a writer. Participating in a revolution, of course, remains my primary goal.

Yes goto, college cuz the world will still turn even if you decide not to go. Remember revolution is a process involving the masses. If the masses are figting for revolution there is no need but as of now you need to survive in this dog eats dog world. It's ideal if everyone quits work or doesnt go to school, but that's not happening and you doing so alone isn;t going to change.
